I'm preparing to drop in a new set of lifters in my 87 350 (I've got one thats breaking down). What I'm not sure of is how to set the valve lash with the engine cold (I've be advised this is the proper way to do it). I'm familiar with this procedure with a warm engine but not cold.

Any additional suggestions are welcome as well.

Before replacing lifters, try adding a quart of ATF to the oil. ATF is about 7 weight and is very detergent [soap]. The ATF will usually soften and disolve any dirt that is not allowing lifter to seal. The ATF will do no harm to the engine and clean up inside the engine. The ATF can be added at any time, without consideration of oil level. The ATF will be consumed by the engine and goes out the exhaust. The clean up usually takes about a week. It is good practice to then do a valve adjustment. A good practice is to allow the lifters to "clack" for a bit as adjusting just before doing the final adjustment. Very little is risked and lots of money and labor can be saved...
