Re: 61 4x4 CL Find

Posting more pics he sent today. By the VIN I think this was ordered as a chassis cab, 1K143 instead of 1K144 . Got the pictures of the 16 inch wheels and they are not correct for this year, they are 1963 or 1964 and up nub wheels. More I talk to him I believe now it did come with the 17.5s, he is relying on his notes from previous owner. Truck was ordered new by the Forest Hill forestry dept. Then was sold to the Grass Valley airport for airplane recovery use in 1969 and used for a short time, then stored for 20 plus years, three owners after that you have what you see today.

Such a cool truck. I'd put it in low and just idle all over town, waving like I had my own parade going.

Nice truck! It is amazing how through the years owners will drill a little here and drill a little there. What is up with the VIN tag being welded. It is very hard to find a truck that is completely unmolested.

Yes the early ones were welded, normally much cleaner weld than this one though.

Re: 61 4x4 CL Find

my vin for my 61 also built in oakland is 111925 only 666 units later. seems odd that the vin plate is crooked also. a box with org hubs, transfer case extra? wounder if ft axle has been changed. would like to see the running gear.

I have a t221 sitting around a well as a pair of hubs and spindles.
when I sold for IHC in mid 70's I was at the San Leandro plant where they made the 42-4300 series trucks. they had gone on strike just prior. on that last day they worked; you wouldn't believe the things that they put on upside down and other things.
that truck more than likely had a few things changed in it's lifetime and wonder how many times it was abused by someone that didn't give a poop

Sorry there Factorystock I'm just going by what the owners have told me. The colors sure look the same as the Bell truck.

Thanks for posting all the nice detailed photos on this '61. IMO, I still believe the owner got his facts wrong. Forest Hill forestry dept? Is this a private forestry division? The U. S. Dept of Agriculture runs the entire U. S. Forestry service. The U.S Forestry service fleet color is shown on this truck. I still say Bell Telephone till owner provides documentation otherwise.http://hooniverse.com/2011/03/24/hoo...en-dodge-d200/

Im loving this debate ! The more I talk to this owner the more I wonder. Just spoke with him this afternoon and brought up the subject, he said there was a round decal on the door and something about having another truck but older with the same decal mark on the door and same color. I have no idea what forestry depts. are in California. I am just repeating his words , but he still stands by what he says. Just sent him the picture of the Bell truck. Will see what he comes back with. You make a lot of sense and show the facts !? Either way I really like this truck !!!

Re: 61 4x4 CL Find

Went to a lot of auctions in the early 80's, here is a photo of 2 Bell Telephone trucks, note the center of doors where the decal would have been.

Re: 61 4x4 CL Find

funny you talking about a pacific telephone truck, as i am retired from the company. (lineman/splicer) I hired on in 71 so a few years later. If you look close at the doors, it looks like something round was in the middle? might have been a lineman's tk or my guess a micro-wave rig, the towers were always in remote ridge tops with not much of a road. My second thought is Fish&Game? can't remember their color, a different green?
