Towing capacity
Whats the towing capacity for a 78 k10 with a 400 sbc? Just curious

Depends on the axle ratio:
3.07 = 8500 GCW 3.40 = 9500 GCW 3.73 = 10500 GCW (Gross Combined Weight). K

no clue what my gear ratio is, all ive been told is that its the original one from 78. Is there a way to tell from looking at the diff case?

Only if you know all the axle part number broadcast codes. Do you still have the SPID label? It should show an axle ratio option code (GQ1-base, or HE4, GT4).
Easiest is to jack it up and spin the wheels and count how many times the driveshaft goes around. Most exact is to pull the rear diff cover and count teeth. Probably needs the fluid changed anyway and this would be a good time to do it. K

ill probably do that in the spring, both my diffs look like theyre leaking a little bit so I want to change the the gaskets before another season of driving, especially with the chance of me getting a job in colorado for the summer, and needing to drive over 1500 miles out there

Pulling and stopping are two very different things. I would make sure you have a trailer with brakes and a brake controller.
