I don't have the exact width right now but they do work. I have the same rear end for my 50 but haven't put it in yet. The explorer 8.8 is a fairly common swap.

Are there certain years of Explorer that one should look for? This sounds like a readily-available junkyard rear.

Re: 02 ford explorer rearend width?

59-1/2 inches.

1991-1994 had 10 inch drum brakes and 1995 and up had rear disc ( the cool ones with the emergency brake are shoes inside the rotor). The majority of them came with 3.73 gears and a Traction-Lok differential.

I have narrowed these in the past but pulling another passenger side axle and cutting two inches out of the driver side and welding it back and using the passenger axle. This will if you 57 1/2 rear with the pinion centered (The pinion is offset in stocked form this is not a problem) for those who want to run some wide meat in the rear.

Kabwe when you say the pinion is off-center but isn't a problem, help this n00b out - if I were to put one on my truck, would I be able to use a standard driveshaft? Do the u-joints compensate for the angle?

I think I may have answered my own question but still quite noobish on driveline stuff.

Re: 02 ford explorer rearend width?

Does anyone know if there is a GM 5 lug rotor that will fit the 95 and up Ford Explorer rear, if I have the axles redrilled for a GM pattern?

OR, can I replace the axle shafts with GM 12 bolt shafts (since this is basically a redesign of the GM 12 rear)?

Yeah you actually answered your own question.lol As long as you have the pinion and transmission in line and setup properly you will have no problems.
