RAD bracket bolt size?/???Please ASAP
I know the top bracket bolts are 5/16 18 1 1/4 coarse.
I need to know what size the bolts are that attach the shroud to the brackets. They look longer and wider thread and smaller diameter. Any help would be appreciated. thanks |

Previous thread link below. The screws thread into J-nuts. Which it sounds like you are missing.

5/16-18 x 7/8" bracket to support
3/8-16 x 3/4" shroud to bracket

Re: RAD bracket bolt size?/???Please ASAP
Normally, I would never disagree with SS Tim. I'd be wrong! But, I have never seen one of these trucks with a machine thread bolt as shown in the parts list in one of these trucks. I've only seen hex head, captured washer sheet metal screws that thread into a J-nut clipped on to the radiator bracket. The screw is probably 1/4" by about 1". Heck, if I were at home I'd pop a couple into an envelope and mail them to you. I'd also tell you the screws are the same as the screws that secure the console to the floor, but odds are you don't have a factory console.
Edit: Looking at the parts diagram again, I see that it does show the J-nut (#34). |

Re: RAD bracket bolt size?/???Please ASAP
The screws do use the J-nuts (for use with sheet metal screw threads). If bolts were used they would also need the J-nuts but they would have to accept bolt threads. Sorry for the confusion. But, I've only seen the screws used.

Re: RAD bracket bolt size?/???Please ASAP
The holes in the bracket are not threaded. You will need the J-nuts. Can you post a picture of the screws you have? A pic of the end of the radiator bracket would also help. Any bolt or screw that fits in the hole would work, but you'd need the corresponding J-nut.

Re: RAD bracket bolt size?/???Please ASAP
The manual does show a J nut, callout #34.
All I'm doing is providing a GM parts reference. In this case the last parts catalog covering 67-72 C10-30 trucks, the 5-79 issue. Jim, Thanks for the kind words but please step in if I ever "sound" wrong. It has been known to happen and I can provide references. :-)

Re: RAD bracket bolt size?/???Please ASAP
ok. decided to go out and take pics. I have smaller brackets I took off. The screw went in it. The HD bracket end is the freshly painted one. I took out the j nut and took that pic too. The screw from the small one wouldnt fit easily in the hd bracket. but I did realize that I can put any screw/bolt and j nut on I want, as long as it fits thru hole. right??

Re: RAD bracket bolt size?/???Please ASAP
Dennis the j-nuts that are on the hold downs are what came with them when I received them. I don't know if they are factory or not though.
