widen 16x5 6 hole wheel?
I have a set of 16x5 six hole wheels that I would like to widen to either 6 or 7 inches. Todays tires just aren't designed to go on a 5" wheel. The centers are riveted to the outers so it wouldn't be hard to seperate them, it's finding the outer replacement rims that is proving to be difficult. Looking for some help with ideas or a source for an outer rim.

Re: widen 16x5 6 hole wheel?
Two things come to mind.
Do your original wheels have clips? Are you preserving the original hubcaps? The 16" original wheels on my 63 were from my old 4wd. I cut and widened using the same ring. A lathe comes in handy, it's finding one with a large enough swing. I cut the ring both side of the rivets, then added a 4inch wide x 1/8 flatstock to the inner and outer half. Then pressed the disk into the wider ring. Some pictures are missing in the thread, but it gives you idea on what I did for the 17.5 inch wheels. I think if you could find an older set of spoke/ wagon wheels that were popular back in the 70's and use that ring and retain your disk. If you grind the rivets from the ring side you can punch the rivets through the disk portion. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=397681&page=2

I like when original wheels are widened.. It gives a modern touch to the old style.
