pulley setup questions

hey guys, i am in the process of trying to get my 68 chevy PU running, i bought a motor that was in a 72 chevy pickup (don't know if it was stock in that truck or not) but i had to switch the power steering pump setup when putting it in the 68. also the alternator is on the passenger side, not on the driver side. and now all the pulleys line up so that everything uses one belt, and i went down to the auto parts store to get a belt, and they said that setup wouldn't work, and that i need to put a differant pulley on the power steering pump so that it'll run a differant belt then the other accessories. has anyone had a problem with this before while swapping motors from differant years. if anyone has any pulley advice please let me know. I apprieciate it. thanks.

Alternator on pass. side is a long water pump setup, 73&up. You will need long pump brackets to get it right. I have long pump on my truck and it does have 3 belts. P.S. air cond. alt,water pump. You probably have the right crank pully with pass. side alt. Good luck John

right now all the pulleys line up with the outter most groove in the crank pulley, closest to the fan, what do you mean by "long pump brackets"?

the long water pumps have one set up, and the short water pumps have another set up.
Short pumps were run on cars from 70 into the mid to late 80s when they went to the serpantine set up, while the trucks didn't go to the long pump untill 73.
You'r best bet, go to a junk yard...and get everthing you need off of one vehicle. All brackets, pullies, spacers...heck, grab the belts too.
i am running the set up off of an 86 or 87 C/20 burb, it has the serpintine style belt, but it only runs the alt instead of going and getting everything with one belt.

The 72 and older trucks use a short water pump and corresponding brackets. 73 up use long water pump and brackets,which it sounds like you have with pass side alt. The power steering pump will have two groove pulley,two groove on water pump,and three on crank. Maybe only two on crank w/o a/c. The 68 pump brackets will not work right with this setup. The newer brackets are alot easier to find in wrecking yards. Hope this helps some John.

the power steering pump that i have hooked up right now is from the 68, and has a 1-groove pulley, the one that was on the motor prior to installation did have a 2 groove pulley, would it be possible to take the 2 groove off and put it on the pump with the one groove? I'm basically trying to think of a way to make a 68 power steering pump work with a 73-up pulley system. thanks for all your help guys.

If you have the long pump style, you need a power steering setup like this. It uses different pump and brackets and a double groove pulley.

I think you are going to have to bite the bullet and get the correct setup that tx firefighter showed. Even if you change pulleys the pulleys will not line up without right brackets. Note the pressed on pulley in pic, if you have the keyed pulley with nut I don't think they will interchange anyhow. I tried to take some pics but they came out to dark to see in my garage.

i'm trying to remember why we didn't put that pump on in the first place, because that pump in the picture was the same as the one that came off the motor, but I think the setup that went down to the hoses or something wouldn't work, i'd have to ask my roomate, when he gets home from work cus he was the one doing the power steering pump setup while i was working under the truck on the rear-end.

If you still have that pump put it on and get a hose for a later model truck that came with long pump. You might have to look at more than one year model hose to get the best fit. I have seen quite a few different configurations on the later hoses. Good luck again John.

Yes, you're going to need the newer style pump, brackets and pulley like I showed in the picture.

Hooking the hose up to the new style pump is a snap just change the fitting that screws in the back of the pump to the 68 one. It takes a 1 inch wrench or socket. Then use the 68 hose. It's that easy.
