1972 GMC Project!
Bought this "beauty" this summer and just recently stumbled upon this sight! Turns out it never made it far in its life, it was originally sold to a fellow just a couple towns over! She is rough but what do you expect for $200. She has also be nicely nicknamed "Sharon" after the crazy old bat that sold me the truck. Got it home pressure washed, tidied up, tossed a fuel pump, plugs, wires and some carb cleaner and drove it around before the tear down started! I will post more photos in the days to come to get caught up to where I am with the project now!
ps. not sure why the photos ended up sideways? |

Re: 1972 GMC Project!
Me and a buddy were out for a drive one night and I mentioned how much I liked the looks of the 67-72s. Week later I tugged it home.
Sharon had not been on the road since '89. She also sat on grass ever since. But someone had gone through and done a wack of body work years ago. Had the original 250 inline 6....not pretty on the inside, 3 in the tree, and no box. Even had the original GM papers in the glove box still! I have cut it down to a short box. I have done lots of research on this sight already! Great help Thanks! And I will need more help to come on where to aim with this project! And also some insight on lots of other things I'm sure! Id like to go 383 stroker but its all a dream for the time! Here are some photos of how pokey the cab is. But in the antique tractor world the moto is if it casts a shadow it can be restored. So here is hoping! |

Re: 1972 GMC Project!
Here I have the cab off and one from the frame that sat out in the ice storm we had a couple weeks back! And the engine and transmission pulled.
You can also see in the last photo that the driver side frame rail is bowed out. Hope to get it to a frame rack shortly hopefully it can be fixed! |

Re: 1972 GMC Project!
About here is where I started into the frame cutting! What a project is all I have to say. Its easy, just nerve racking! I would also like to give thanks to glock35ipsc with his thread on how to do this step HUGE help!
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=123624 The only difference is I did not use the diamond shaped plate he did. I will be boxing the frame where the cut is after I sandblast it. It was a good project and cleaned up nice! Now I have a couple pokey spots in the frame that need a touch up and its off to the frame rack! |

Re: 1972 GMC Project!
Anyone know if frame straightening is gonna cost me and arm or leg? Or even of this is fixable? The guy loading the truck was not overly careful about where or how he pulled on the frame!

Re: 1972 GMC Project!
Well I have been back at school the last few weeks but I did accomplish a lot on the weekends! here is a little catch up. The frame damage from rust was aggressive most of the driver side is replaced. Next time I will restore something in better shape! I also had a couple cross members and braces to fix. I do have some more cross member pieces that need to be re made completely hopefully this weekend I will get a start on those!

Re: 1972 GMC Project!
Here is one of the cross member I fixed. Then one of everything being bolted back together just to check how everything has aligned to this point! I had never been into my rear end until recently either. It was soooo cold and there was sooooo much water in it that it was frozen solid!

Re: 1972 GMC Project!
I took the gauge cluster with me to school last week and started working on it. Figured I could do something truck related instead of homework! I wanted to keep the original gauges and such but paint it to better suit what I wanted. I'm going to do a red and black interior. So I am going to attempt to change the back light colour to red instead of the usual green. And I had some fun in the painting of the peices! I will have to wired up hopefully later tomorrow and will post some pictures of this adventure!

Re: 1972 GMC Project!
I started out by cleaning everything up with a little wire wheel on a dremel. That thing worked wonders! I painted the inside of the back with some rattle can "chrome" to reflect the light the best. I then painted everything that was originally green to a nice red! The original plexi glass that had the sink screen numbers and letters even was saved. I used some steel wool and rubbed the paint off. Then just lightly dusted it in some red. So now everything will light up red to match the rest of the future interior. I needed something to do the last few days at school! This was an excellent project. And I get to use everything that is original to the gauge cluster!
