What are Longhorns going for?

Hey all, I have a guy that is wanting to sell his 1971 Cheyenne Longhorn, and Im trying to figure out a decent asking price. He is the original owner, and is like 80 years old and just doesnt use it anymore.
Here are some details that I was given.
1971 Cheyenne Longhorn 3/4 ton
-Green w/ white top
-350,(not sure what trans)
-New upholstry, floor mats, steering wheel, wood bed w/ stainless strips
-1 owner, never wrecked
-Includes(but not installed) headliner and glove box.

I am told it runs and drives no problem.
Anyone got an idea of a fair price on something like this? Its a Cali truck, so Im sure there is no rust at all.

Re: What are Longhorns going for?

Looks like a nice Horn. Prices are realy specific to region though and also will determain how fast the truck will sell. I have a local customer that has been trying to sell his gloss black Cheyenne Super Longhorn for two years at $7500.00 Real nice pampered truck with a 402 BB with A/C, tach, and tilt column. It just hasn't sold. WES

Seems like at least a $6-7 truck in TEXAS if solid/ rust free and not too many old man mods

Re: What are Longhorns going for?

Maybe at the most $6K. A lot will depend on the options, colors and if it has visor/roof rust. Original owner ususally does not make a lot of difference. Plus there is an originality issue diminished by the replacement parts. Don't base anything on that over hyped auction truck telesis built. While the production numbers quoted are about accurate they omit the fact that far less C30 Longhorns were built and seem to hold a price premium over the C20 version. Longhorns in general have specific buyers and proves rare does not mean valuable. In the end two pictures and no SPID kind of makes most of this a WAG especially from people across the country. There have been several Longhorns along the east coast I have been interested in due to content but they were far too expensive to ship 2800 miles especially when you factor in the rust issue in general. While going the other way is better in that sense it is a deal breaker still in most cases.

Re: What are Longhorns going for?

Out here in the deserts of Cali, 2500-4000 is the average cause there are a lot still around. I sold my 72 1 ton to a gentleman in New Mexico for 3800, but I invested some of that back into it for him, new tires and a tune up, but that is how I role. The in fad right now is a lot of people are chopping the LWB trucks and making SWB trucks. Not a high demand for LWB or longhorns right now unless this is what you want out of a truck for yourself. I have a GMC model Longhorn and plan to keep it for the pure fact of just enjoying it. I recommend you just use your budgit wisely and get the one you really want and if it is this Longhorn, enjoy my board brother. I would offer 2500 for the one listed here your looking at, as long as it is running strong, Lighting works and gages work with no rust. Straight and never recked also. Good luck and enjoy, Longhorns are awesome!!!

Re: What are Longhorns going for?

Sadly, I looked at, and passed on this 72 longhorn highlander that was marked down to $4500 (original asking price was $5500, and that was a good deal in my book. It didn't sell, so he marked it down again, who knows what it finally sold for). Big block, tach, a/c, toolbox, orange plaid, Custom Camper, Longhorn. I want to kick myself so hard I could cry, but I simply had no room to put this gem. Ran great and pretty much no rust. AZ truck. It all depends where you're buying/selling to determine the market. Yours looks to be in pretty good shape, but you're in CA, so I'd estimate a $7k+ asking price with a mindset to take any offer over $5.8k (unless you have so much sunk cost that you just can't go that low). I know how it feels, I'm about to take a pretty hefty loss on my 71 C20 Super... Ha. Ironically, once I sell it, I might have had room for this Longhorn (just not in my garage, it's too long!) Anyway, I LOVED this white highlander, wish I could have made it work. Seller was a great guy too.

Sadly, I passed on Billy's 72 super longhorn too, a Ridgecrest original truck!! - and I'll never forgive myself!

Tim hit the nail on the head - rare does not = valuable. And thank goodness, because I tend to buy more than I sell and I like this big old birds.

Had a clean low rust all original green/white longhorn listed CL just a few days ago for 6900. It's gone if that give you any idea.

Re: What are Longhorns going for?

Like other West Coasters have said between $2-4000 with a max of $6000 if really good condition. Longhorn are rare but not valuable. There's been a few posted up here and rust free, running/driving in similar shape to above is usually around $4500. I see a lot of long bed trucks sitting on CL for a long time up here and some are amazing trucks and would sell for $15-20gs in the Eastern states based of the appraisals I'm seeing from those over there.

Re: What are Longhorns going for?

Hi! I'd have to agree with most, Longhorns are generally worth less on the average than short and long beds. And with that said, like others have mentioned the price that a Longhorn may bring in one area will vary to that in another. But don't forget about he options. And boy there are many! I can see that your friend's Longhorn has a bed toolbox, and with the new parts that it has on it, I'd (without looking at engine), guess around $5,500 to $6,000. However, I'd start out high, such as $8,000 because buyers will most always try to talk you down.

Re: What are Longhorns going for?

I would guess that truck at....$4500 low value...and up to $6500, no more.
I fully agree with some of the comments regarding the fact that rare does not necessarily mean valueable.
Its hard to find an early 80's chevy citation car too....or a 'trebant'....but they aren't going for much..LOL
THat is a nice looking, clean truck but the Longhorns are a bit of an acquired taste.
They are heavier, harsher ride, very long wheelbase...and because of that don't particularly lend themselves to a performance build or easy modification.
Just my two bits.
All good

Re: What are Longhorns going for?

Longhorns are the equivalent of the old Dodge Dudes IN TERMS OF VALUE/DEMAND (for those that remember them, the Dodge Dude trucks are so cool I always wanted one, but sadly I'm the "odd duck" they never made very many Dudes so they are quite rare also (genuinely rare, not made up rare) prices have come up slightly recently though.
As cool as the longhorns and dudes are, it always comes down to demand=price, and there isn't that much demand.
I'd go $5k and out, I'd offer that much is because it is a "survivor" just needs a driver.

Re: What are Longhorns going for?

I believe the dude was a cosmetic package only. longhorn's purpose in life was the 6" longer bed to fit the next size up slide in camper.

Re: What are Longhorns going for?

Correct but how many have you seen?
Not many, My point was;
They are both rare trucks but the demand and hence, price/value isn't there.

*edit-fixed my post Jocko, i wasn't comparing them in terms of options, intended purpose etc. just demand/value.

You bet he was. He didn't just sell the "Dude" trucks. He was Dodge's spokesperson for their entire truck/van lineup back in the early 70s.

As far as what the Longhorn is worth, I'd have to say based on trucks for sale in Iowa and KS, around $4-6000. They're nice trucks, but if you want to sell it for a premium price you better go to Oklahoma or Texas.

Seller+buyer=value.

Condition of the truck is the determining factor.
