Re: Vinegar for rust removal
I used never dull on the aluminum side pieces on my 66. They looked great. Then I wiped them with a wet rag, and they went instantly dull again.

Re: Vinegar for rust removal
Did you strip the clear anodizing off of them first?

Re: Vinegar for rust removal
You need to remove the clear anodizing from aluminum before you can polish it. Oven cleaner works good for that.

Re: Vinegar for rust removal
Put this on the build thread...but thought it might be more use here to show the results. Been working on getting the fleetside assembled now that I have a clean title back and have been soaking some more parts. I have gone to a 75% vinegar and 25% clr solution and its sped up the process by about 30%. Still getting the same great results......a pic of the tailgate chains which were left in a 5gal bucket of water by the PO for an undisclosed time frame....they looked rough before 3 days of soaking.

Re: Vinegar for rust removal
I may have to give this a try for all the hardware & little brackets I'm pulling off as I repair the front rust. Does it hurt any to leave stuff soaking too long? I don't want to leave the bolts in a bucket for a few weeks and come back to find them dissolved.

Re: Vinegar for rust removal
Ive left steel bolts in for up to two weeks with no issues. I do rinse with a baking soda & water mix....just a 1/4 box or so in a 5gal bucket. I've had great success with the vinegar. The 25% CLR mix is something new I've been doing and it seems to help cut the soak time down some. After a few days soaking, I take a wire brush to them, resoak for a few hours or another day, do my baking soda and water rinse and air dry. It will give the metal a nice prepped surface for self etching primer (which I use on all bare metal). Posts some pics of before and after too if you don't mind.

Re: Vinegar for rust removal
I put my headlight buckets and after a week it was clean bare metal. I sprayed with rustolyum and it came out awesome. The 292 6cyl water jackets are crusty rusty so I put a few gallons of vinegar and letting it set for 3 months now so we will see what happens
