i installed another wiring harness and have problems

ok, i finally got around to it and pulled the old one out and put the used one i bought in. headlights wouldnt work. dash wouldnt work--like all the lights stay on constant and fuel gauge doesnt work... i tried another dash i had same thing happened.... everything hooked right up. i replaced all the fuses with the ones from my old harness and my tail lights are on constantly......???????????????? after playing alittle my headlights come on but thats it. both turn signal lights and high beam indicator stay on on the dash. i have the ground on.... what could be the problem. also, the plug that goes on the heater controls isnt right one and doesnt have the other part that plugs on the heater behind the glovebox and doesnt have the wire that goes to blower motor???? on my old on it was part of the plug that went to heater controls... anybody know what could be wrong?

the other harness was all chopped up. i may end up looking at it and fixing it. the whole dash doesnt work... the old dash did. i put new dash and new harness in at the same time but the old dash doesnt work. headlight switch works bc headlights come on. are harnesses very year specific? im not getting power to actual gauge... i did with old dash and harness though. its all hooked up. my sending unit is bad so it stays at empty all the time

Did the replacement harness and dash come from the same vehicle?

The only thing that comes to mind is you might have a harness for idiot light dash instead of a guage panel dash? You might want to check out the pinout for two to make sure they are the same setup that plugs into your dash.

Here is link to GMC Pauls that shows the different pinouts
