The diesel truck? Oh my old Duramax... she's got a new home. Divorce will do that to you.

It just had your basic go fast goodies. Air dog, intake, exhaust, ppe crack pipe, downpipe, turbo inlet, built trans, level kit, EFI Live... etc.

It was a lot of fun and got about 20mpg on the highway.

Now she's gone. Searching for another one.

Re: My new favorite thing.

Some more work and some parts. Door skins are in, bed patch panels are on the way, rear roll pan is in. Rocker panels and floor pans are repaired. Frame, floors, cab, and underside of bed are all coated with POR-15. Majority of body work is done. 5/5 drop is in but not installed (waiting on the rear springs) Paint will be oxide red similar to the Hales Speed Shop built c10 on bags and transport wheels.

Still looking for wheels...

Man, you have made great progress. Looks like really good job on the rust repair. I know how time consuming that is. Yep, hit it till it fits.

you'll be happy to know the truck will stay red, though a slightly different shade.

Re: My new favorite thing.

Ok ... Got some more insight on the engine .... Has less then 1000 miles on it since it was rebuilt 3 years ago .... Hasn't been driven in a year, just been started and started and started. Had a carb issue since it was built and finally rebuilt it right before it was brought over here ... They tried for about three weeks to start it then brought it to the shop before I bought it. While being taken apart... some things were discovered. Oil was thinned out with something .... We couldnt place the smell .... It is a cross between kerosene and dead gas. Main bearings are washed out, would assume the cam bearings are as well. Heads look immaculate as does the camshaft. Info on the block is 80-85 2 bolt main ... Pistons 030 over, crank and rods 020 as it sits ... Looks like it was walking a bit .... One tappet is cupped, the rest didn't show much wear... SO im at the point of machining and rebuilding the old block, or buying a new longblock with a warranty.

This is kinda discouraging, especially since we were still under budget and things were rolling so smoothly (except for those D@MN suspension springs!!!!) Not truly sure what Im going to do. Any suggestions?

Re: My new favorite thing.

Well folks, Im back from Afghanistan. The truck is waiting on a new windshield, clutch, flywheel, and hydraulics. So really it's waiting on me to have money enough to buy them...

Besides that, the advent of colder weather and such has led me to not be able to get the glaze to cure before its too late in the day. Its proving quite annoying.

I'll post pictures this week.

Re: My new favorite thing.

Welcome home and thanks for your service to our country!

I have a coworker who is SeeBee and just left for Afghanistan about 3 weeks ago and just arrived last week, i don't know how long she will be deployed, she is leaving behind 2 kids and a hubby, she emailed and said its a bit unnerving because where she is working the locals are within eye sight every day and if you can see them then they can see you, you don't know who the enemy is...

Per the truck, it will fall into place, and yea winter sucks!

Re: My new favorite thing.

Well, I have good news and bad news folks... Good news is all thats left is to finish the body work and put it together. Bad news is, whoever owned the truck prior decided to gel coat the entire body. Its taking massive amounts of time and grinding wheels to get off (yes I said grinding wheels) and what does come off is a little at a time. Im fairly certain the metal could have rusted away and the gel coat would have held the body intact. That being said, the task isnt impossible and once we get out of this polar vortex of doom, it should come along quickly.

I decided to swap the cam and heads off my old block onto the new (to me) crate engine just to give it a bit of a power boost. With it being on a stand currently, makes it quite easy. I have no idea as to the spec of the cam, since the last owner put it in, but it should prove interesting.

Further discussion has led me to believe that the stock axle ratio with the NV3500 swap will prove too long of gearing. Im looking to probably run 3.55 or around that for the rear to try and help balance things out.

Still have no idea what size tires will fit now that the 5/5 drop is installed. Its only slightly worrisome to me that the 235/75/r15 tires on there now, appear to be too tall for the truck... however, without the body, its hard to tell.

Thanks for everyone who has stuck around and with this project. I'll be keeping it updated more now that i'm not travelling so much.

Brian.... that red you loved so dearly? Turned out to look like a bass boat. Metal flake and gel coated. Garnet red was an attractive color. Unfortunately it looked more like redneck maroon.

Good to be back! Is that taking into account the 5/5 drop or just the standard size that is run? I worry about all angles of rubbage (thats not a word) with the drop, no notch, and suburban wheels that are on there. Im trying to avoid doing this step over and over.

Re: My new favorite thing.

Looks good. I have my 370z gel coated. Supposed to keep it clean and shiny. As much as it costs it's not as good as I thought. Tell me about the grinding wheels your using. Are you not hitting metal with it? I imagine some jasco would strip that stuff off with less time. Lay it down, cover with suran wrap and walk away for an hour...

Re: My new favorite thing.

More like they worked at the bass boat factory and got the paint for free. I used a 4" 40 grit wheel... took four to do one bedside. I havent tried Jasco or anything. I'll give it a thought.
