77 Chevy - Fix for Broken Glove Box Hinge?

My glove box door is about to drop off due to the plastic door hinge wearing smooth out. Parts vendors want $50 for a new plastic insert. Anyone fixed theirs without that much money outlay? Will a piano hinge from the hardware store work? I must admit, I haven't eyeballed it too close other than to see it's about to fall off completely.

Been a while since I posted here. Good to be back. Lots been going on I am sure. Chevy trucks are more popular than ever. I did some work to mine recently. Added the tool box from my newer Chevy and had it painted to match. Had to replace the 2nd china hood as it failed in the middle like they all do. This time. I just left off the hinge springs. Heavy, but doesn't buckle. Hold it up with a broom stick! haha. Guess I never took pics of the tool box after painting. I'll add one on the morrow.

I had the painter redo the clear coat on the top of the RED all the way around front to rear as it had started to fade away. The first painter goofed it up somehow, didn't last. When I had the tool box repainted, he also did the top of the cab to boot. Now, the whole truck looks pretty good. Not perfect, but OK.

Grab a new glove box from an old truck. I have at least 3 extras

I think I may have one in the attic if you are unsuccessful. Have to check.

Make sure you get the correct one too; AC and non-AC trucks are different.

Re: 77 Chevy - Fix for Broken Glove Box Hinge?

Well, not sure if he did, but I had a look and did this last night. I bought a 12" piano hinge ( which is not full length but will work) a while ago and hadn't gotten around to it, but my glovebox had fallen completely out so it was time.
Drilled some holes and tacked it on with some 3/16 rivets. The only slight issue was that when I put it back in, the top of the box interfered with the bottom of the dash pad so I have propped that up a little.

Thanks!

Re: 77 Chevy - Fix for Broken Glove Box Hinge?

In a pinch, I used some thick foil tape (like it used on home ac/heater ducts). I put a length of it on both sides of the plastic hinge and it held the two pieces together long enough that I forgot all about wanting to replace it.

Re: 77 Chevy - Fix for Broken Glove Box Hinge?

I posted a link up earlier but it blocked it out for some reason. I'll try posting it up again but adding spaces. I haven't added the fix to my thread yet.
