Replacement Power Steering Hose?

Hello - I need help finding a power steering hose that will work for my old blue 72 chevy which has a 402 big block in her. I know the original GM part has been discontinued (GM part #3975151). It is the pressure hose that runs along the top of the frame the bends upwards and into the power steering pump/can.

What other hose part numbers have been used in place of the original?

I will try to get some pictures posted.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have a NAPA number for one of the remote reservoir hoses but I don't remember which hose it was. The number is NPS 73306. I would think the number for the other hose would be close to that if this one is not the right one.

Re: Replacement Power Steering Hose?

You can get the hoses from LMC or other classic Chevy truck sites. Be careful though. I got mine from LMC and as I have experienced many times with them before, this part, as well as others doesn't fit properly. I had to cut the hard line and install a Swagelok coupling to get it to clock right.

Re: Replacement Power Steering Hose?

Thanks for the replys, but I would prefer to not to have to cut/splice the line to make it work.

I am sure someone out there has information for a good replacement part for this discontinued big block item.

Re: Replacement Power Steering Hose?

remove the hose, walk into a industrial equip./hydraulic parts house, and see if they can make you one. i know that my local napa makes these hoses and brake hoses.

Re: Replacement Power Steering Hose?

Please let us know if you find one. I ordered one from LMC or Classic, but it was the wrong one. Went to every auto parts store around here and for some reason they all show the same hose in there books, but it's wrong!! NAPA actually told me that my someone changed the engine in my truck, that chevy didn't put BB in them, i just walked out... not worth arguing with them.
I finally had to take it to a hydraulic shop, had them cut off the ends, weld them to hydraulic fittings and crimp on new hydraulic hose, cost like $40.00. Might have a pic of it, will look and see.

Found a pic of new hose installed, not a great pic, but it doesn't look that bad in the truck

Re: Replacement Power Steering Hose?

These trucks have been changed around and parts replaced for the last 40 years to the point where parts don't necessarily match between them so it will be hard to get the exact same hose.

I know I've replaced the gearbox on my 69 twice and both times I went to junkyards and got the complete asm including hoses from the donor vehicle. One of them was a Dodge truck.

Best bet, as mentioned above, is to take it to a good hydraulic line shop. These guys are experts at doing that kind of work since they deal with a lot of industrial type stuff.

Re: Replacement Power Steering Hose?

Thanks you everybody for your replys!

I think I got lucky, I did a search on the original GM part #3975151 and found one at the following site:

http://www.oldsmobileobsolete.com/it...r-/lid=3829321

Looks like I bought the only 1 they had. We'll see if it fits when its delivered. I will let you all know.

You will never find one. You are in luck though....board vendor Pickmup has some for sale that he had made up and are EXACT reproductions. Here is the link: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=497627

Welcome to the board neighbor!

Re: Replacement Power Steering Hose?

The ones from good parts houses don't fit? Over the years, I have used many CarQuest hose assemblies made with good quality Gates hose and never had an issue. What is so unusual about this one?

It is not a quality issue. It is the wrong part in the catalog/computer. Take a look at your hose and compare to what catalog has and you will see. GM discontinued the part and no aftermarket supplier picked it up. Propably due to lack of demand since it is only for BB's.

After looking at the OP's picture again it looks like his pump and reservoir are integral. Didn't all big block trucks have the remote reservoir from the factory? Maybe that's why none of the hoses he gets will fit.

The OP posted this thread 6 months ago...there was another person that brought it back up to the top. Also, the OP 's picture is cutting off the remote reservoir hose coming in at the top of the pump. If he had centered the pic a little farther forward i believe you would see it.

You might want to try the parts board.
