Exhaust
Guess I need a schooling in exhaust, I've got 540 bbc with Sanderson headers. I would guess it's going to make 650 horse or so. Do I need x pipe, h pipe or whatever else is out there. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks, Gary

Re: Exhaust
We just fired up my boss' truck and it makes around the same amount of HP. We used 3" tubing all the way back with an H pipe. Use a kit that has mandrel bent pipes or if your designing it yourself I think Flowmaster has mini kits to allow for more choices on muffler selection.

Re: Exhaust
My 13-1 418" ls motor makes 520rwhp through a loose stall converter which would most likely net over 600 at the crank. Out has also made 680rwhp through one stage of n20. I am running a 3" x-pipe.

Re: Exhaust
Is this for drag racing only, or do you need some sound attenuation for street use? If it's the latter, either an X- or H-pipe addition will create turbulence in the exhaust flow to attenuate some sound. If this is a drag race only, I try to use the largest diameter, straight through exhaust possible.

Re: Exhaust
X and H pipes help with scavenging of the cylinders... is it needed?? no, not really
will it slightly change the exhaust tone? yes

Re: Exhaust
It's going to be a street/ show truck, what's the difference between x and h, or does it matter?

Re: Exhaust
i have an 11-1 383 with 3 inch exhaust pipe x pipe with dynomax bullets dumped i used all mandrel bent tubing when i made it and it has no cackling very smooth exhaust note. x pipes/h pipes help scavenging add horsepower in the upper rpm range and smooth out the exhaust tone. if you do add an h pipe or x pipe it is supposed to be as close to the header collector as possible.

Re: Exhaust
X pipes kill some power in the upper rpm range but low end and mid range usually get a nice boost. An H pipe will give some gains all around. Both will change the sound but an x pipe will mellow out the sound some. I would run a 3 inch system on that x pipes can be harder to run sometimes than an h pipe is.

Re: Exhaust
How x pipes can kill upper end horsepower is beyond me, as I have put them on big blocks and small blocks which all made better power up top. Summit racing has a very good tutorial video comparing the two where they talk about how x pipes will always make more Peak horsepower than an h pipe where as an h pipe will make better torque. Either way big blocks like to breathe so they need a free flowing exhaust, so it really comes down to what you want it to sound like what kind of performance and how much space you have! Good luck

Exhaust is one of those things that has to be tested like crazy to optimize the power. Kind of like carb tuning.
