Can you tell me what this was, how important is it , and do I need a new 1?

I am changing intake manifolds and I went to remove hose from this and it broke. Not the hose. Some people say it's a vacuum modulator but I don't find anything like that by doing searches. The line that comes off the top goes to the transmission I believe. The tranny is a th400.

You don't even have to tell me what it is or how important as long as you tell me how to get another 1.

^^^^ YEP^^^^
That is just a multi-tap vacuum port. nothing special. Just install a single tap vacuum port for the tranny.

I scrounge them at the salvage yard but I would think the auto parts stores would have them in the "help" section. Ask for a vacuum port fitting. I would take that one with me for thread size...

The line from the tee goes to the modulator mounted on the transmission. Here is a link to a tee like you want.

The hard line to the transmission on my original 69 has a long nipple ending in a raised portion/ring. A short length (about 1-1/2") of rubber tubing was slipped over the nipple before inserting it fully into the tee. I'm not sure all years were the same.
