Cali. Smog Help...

I have a 1986 chevy c10 stepside .. And was wondering if anyone knows if to pass the smog do I need the service engine light to work.. My truck doesn't have that option .. Does anyone with an 86 have it? It should lite up when you turn the key.. I'm not sure if the cluster that's on there now is the original ..

My 83 has the check engine light just above the speedometer and gas gauge, it needs to light up when you turn the key on, that's the first thing they check on a smog test.

Re: Cali. Smog Help...

Check your emissions label under the hood. If it is a CA emissioned truck, it should have the check engine light in between and just above the speedo and gas gauge like Malo said and yes, it will have to function. If it is a 49 state (federal emission) truck, it wont have a check engine light.
It will also need to have all original emissions equipment. (cat, air injection, factory air cleaner with thermac valve, charcoal canister, stove pipe to air cleaner from exhaust manifold, egr valve, heat riser valve (efe), factory distributor, stock carb, (the factory electronic quadrajet version for 86), functioning gas caps that will pass the leak down test and, if you have a single gas tank, it will have to pass the smoke test for the evap system. (dual tanks dont require that portion). Oh, and it has to run clean....

Be sure to change the oil first. More than once I have seen a vehicle fail, change the oil and it passes. Dirty oil holds hydrocarbons. Change the oil, give it good gas and run it down the freeway for awhile and then pull right into the shop....

Good luck..... (gotta love our state 'eh?)
