Slide In Camper on a K10
Just like the title says.....is it an option? Or do I have to step up to a 20?

Re: Slide In Camper on a K10
It depends on how much it weighs. My camper is 2100# and my k30 dually doesn't notice it much but my k20 squats down an inch and a half.

Re: Slide In Camper on a K10
Exactly!
If it is a little Four Wheel type pop up camper it is no big deal but if you’re looking at a big overhead high top camper that could be a problem. Find out how much the camper weights then also keep in mind all of the crap you will put inside the camper. You would be surprised how quickly they gain weight once you start stocking up your camper with essentials. You know, like the fully stocked bar that end up weighing 80 lbs. My camper is a 2011 custom made lightweight aluminum frame construction camper built by Phoenix Campers that only weighs around 700 lbs empty but all the stuff I put in it makes crazy heavy. The entire truck with camper, fuel, water, food, beer, one passenger, etc. weighs a tad over 8,000 lbs when packed for the road. The factory GVWR for my truck is actually 6200 lbs. but there isn’t anything left of the ½ ton equipment on my truck other than the short bed ½ ton frame. Everything under it all 1 ton.

Re: Slide In Camper on a K10
It all depends on the camper and your truck's GVWR. The GVWR should be on the plate in the door jamb. Get the weight of the camper and the truck and add them. Then add the weight of all you will carry including people, water, clothes, food, etc. Odds are pretty good that you will have in excess of the GVWR. You should never exceed that weight. In fact, it's against the law in most states. As a rule of thumb, I'd say if it's a cab-over camper (usually 96" wide) with an 8' floor you'd be pushing it or over, especially on a 4X4 with the higher center of gravity and added weight over a 2WD. If it's not a cabover (usually less than 96" wide) you may be OK. I carried an 11' (floor length) camper on my C/20 with the HD coil suspension for many, many years. It was a white knuckle experience every time out. Today, I would never use anything but a 1 ton dually for that size camper. Adding bigger tires, helper springs, air shocks or air bags will not change the GVWR. The GVWR is usually limited by the axle weight ratings.
Others may say if it doesn't sag it'll be OK or they've done it for years without a problem. That does not make it safe or legal. Last edited by FirstOwner69; 02-13-2014 at 01:32 PM. |
