Re: Project: Scott's IFS into 51 GMC
Made some more progress. I bought a new U-joint for the steering column. I cut the end off the van column to shorten it, and made it into a D shaft by grinding 2 flat spots in it.

Re: Project: Scott's IFS into 51 GMC
This is what it looks like now. I added some 2 inch blocks in the rear to bring it down to the same level as the front.

Gary - when you had the stock axle, what were you using for the power steering ?

Re: Project: Scott's IFS into 51 GMC
I had a home made power steering setup using a 75 C10 steering box mounted outside the left front frame rail, similar to the kits you can buy. I did not work well because I used the original steering arm on on the spindle, and it would not turn fully left or right. The kits use a shorter arm that is bolted to the top of the spindle, and should work better. But I can't say for sure, I never installed one.

Why, thank you very much! Now it's time to drive it and make sure everything works right.

Re: Project: Scott's IFS into 51 GMC
How did the alignment go on the front suspension?

Re: Project: Scott's IFS into 51 GMC
Gary -thanks for the info. I've heard that setup doesn't work too well. I'm looking at using a Toyota land cruiser box that mounts on top of the frame rail. But that's in the distant future.

Re: Project: Scott's IFS into 51 GMC
I adjusted the toe-in with a tape measure, and the camber with a level against the rim. Didn't mess with the caster, and it seems to drive fine. Very stable at any speed.

Re: Project: Scott's IFS into 51 GMC
Still happy with it now that you have put some miles on it?
I'm sold on that setup, going to be my next upgrade probably this winter. I have to get the things I've already bought installed first before spending any more $$$ though. |

Re: Project: Scott's IFS into 51 GMC
Hi Russell, the suspension is working great, no problems with it at all. The old truck is a pleasure to drive now!

Re: Project: Scott's IFS into 51 GMC
I think this thread convinced me that this is the way I want to go. I ordered mine yesterday so it should be here sometime next month.

Re: Project: Scott's IFS into 51 GMC
Thanks, it all seems to be working well. The truck looks better in pictures, of course, the paint job is really old, but still looks decent. It's a lot more pleasant to drive now, I think I am going to do a gear swap in the rear axle soon to bring the RPM down.
