New invention to fill my '73...no more spilling

So I was thinking about this for a while and finally fab'd it up today. Bought a metal gas cap from the auto store along with a metal funnel. Drilled out the middle and inserted the funnel. I couldnt weld it because the metal is thin so I used plumbers solder and a torch. I keep it in a plastic tub in the bed.

Works awesome. What do you think?

nice, you are gonna want to seal up the collar around the base of the funnel itself as well, i have one and it leaked like hell until i hit it with a little jb weld

If you just hold the trigger on the nozzle partially down, and dont bury it all the way down the fill hole it won't overflow either

That doesn't really work with California nozzles. Unless you go extremely slow it will overflow.

It mainly for the CA hoses with the plastic foreskin

good timing with this. Dropping my truck off this week to start paint. Also looking to modify refuel area so I dont spill anymore here in Cali. Since this wont exactly work here, what else you guys doing?

Here you go. You have to pull back that rubber foreskin and the nozzle only fits part way into the tank.

Carry a screwdriver and take it off (since only a worm clamp holds it on) each time you fill up :P

Interesting you post a picture of the gas pump next to a VW bus..

I have been fighting this problem in Dallas, Texas with my 77 VW Bus and now I have a 78 C10 that is causing the same issues.

MY FIX:

I have a small power screwdriver. I quickly remove the rubber vapor hose on the gas nozzle (usually only one nut on the hose clamp) and replace when I am done. Hopefully in the future I will forget to replace the vapor hose and will make regular appearances at that particular pump.

The picture was just off the internet...not my bus.

But I woudl be worried about getting a nice fat fine from the great state of California for something like that.

nah not for me either. I'd just whip out my utility knife and circumcize them hoses like I was a moyl(sp?)

For the past few years ive always wondered what was with the issue everyone was having when filling up as I never experienced a problem...fast forward to last week. Go to fill up, set the pump and as im looking my truck over I notice a puddle forming under my nozzle. I found setting the pump slower and turning the nozzle at a 45 degree angle helped. However if I had nice paint your invention would be something id definitely fab up.
