What's the difference between a Custom and Custome Deluxe?

My truck is a mixup of Custom and Cheyenne and Super parts, not really a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but curious what the Deluxe adds.

Re: What's the difference between a Custom and Custome Deluxe?

Is yours a 71 or 72? Custom is the base trim level which means no trim. Custom Deluxe steps up to fancy door panels and trim on the windows, dash knobs, cloth seat, lower trim on the outside. Still a rubber mat but color keyed w/interior

If it has a headliner it's a Cheyenne or Super cab. Got pictures?

Re: What's the difference between a Custom and Custome Deluxe?

What is the difference between a custom and a custom deluxe? Uh the Deluxe, duh. Kidding.you know I have no idea one has more stuff. I just get what I'm dealt and build'em into what my vision of that truck is to be. I would guess most of us do it that way unless it is a full on resto or a point type show rig,and if the latter were the case we would all have to be a BUNCH more picky when we go truck shopping. Jim

Every Chevy Custom Deluxe truck that I have seen wether it is a C/10 or C/20 has a leaf spring rear suspention. Custom 10s or 20s didn't. WES

Here's a link to the generic info packet for a '72 Chevy pickup from the GM Heritage Center archives.

You can read about all of the available content and how it was packaged in here.

Re: What's the difference between a Custom and Custome Deluxe?

It does have a leaf spring rear.

I've cleaned it up and changed steering wheel and put in a radio since this was taken.

Re: What's the difference between a Custom and Custome Deluxe?

The link Keith posted is a great source for information on these trucks. Be sure to click on it and check out all the info on your truck. Here is what it says about the difference between the trim levels.
Remember a Custom in 1972 was the Base model truck.
Custom Deluxe was the next trim level up. RPO code Z62.
The Cheyenne was one trim level up from Custom Deluxe. Cheyenne is RPO code Z84.
One up from the Cheyenne was the Cheyenne Super, RPO code YE9.

Bruce - that is interesting.

In later (Squarebody) years, the Custom Deluxe became base, Z62 became Scottsdale and YE9 became Silverado. Z84 went away.

I suppose since they are merely RPOs associated with a trim level the Marketing team can content them and name them as they see fit.

Was that only in the USA Wes ? Here is a pic of sheet I got from GM on my Chevy Custom/ Deluxe 1972 truck and it came with trailing arms and a being C10 if it had leafs from the factory they would show on the sheets I have cause trailing arms were standard on Chevys and leafs on GMC's and the leafs would show as a seperate line item on a Chev. There was no spid on my truck when I got it.

Re: What's the difference between a Custom and Custome Deluxe?

Leaf springs may have been standard on GMCs,but their SPID lists the leaf springs as an option. I never noticed a pattern of leaf option on Custom Deluxes. In '71 Custom Deluxe was introduced and Custom became base trim,in '73 the Custom Deluxe became the base truck.

Re: What's the difference between a Custom and Custome Deluxe?

My dad would order his trucks and there was a lot of freedom in putting together what you wanted back then. I don't know if you could delete standard items from a trim level but you could sure add to it by individual items and not have to have a package to get specific items. He always had different ideas of what a truck should be compared to what the dealers stocked and he waited a long time to get them special order.

...thats interesting......maybe a local thing or?
Mine is a '72 Custom Deluxe 10 (w/ Highlander option special package C)....but...mine has factory trailing leafs and coils.
Around here...most of the Chevys (even a lot of the 3/4 tons) have trailing arm suspension. The leafs are pretty hard to find for the most part...unless you come across the GMC's for all the previously explained reasons.

I have had two Highlanders and both were trailing arm and coils as well.

Us, too. Usually dad's truck proved to be popular enough that the dealer would have to park it around back to keep from selling it until we could come and get it

I was probably in my 30's before I bought my first "used" vehicle.

Prior to that they were all special orders (examples in the links in my signature line).
