Spindle/ 4x4 hub help
I am in the process of replacing the spindle on my 1987 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4. I pulled the locking hub and everything off of the passenger side now I just need to buy parts. Does anybody have a picture/diagram of how it all goes back on with snaprings and everything? People say it is not a hard job but I am stressing putting it all back on with the snaprings. Some snaprings just fell out when I took it apart and Idk where they go. Thanks.

I would check autozone. Usually they can provide drawing. Or your local library.

Re: Spindle/ 4x4 hub help
There is a small snapping that goes on the axle and an other that goes inside the spindle after you get all the aluminum inner workings of your hub installed. If you have manual hubs the aluminum piece that the outer hub bolts to is held in place by the larger snap ring. The piece that slides on the splined of the axle is held in by the small snap ring.

Re: Spindle/ 4x4 hub help
It is mostly about what locking hubs you have. The snap-rings have nothing to do with the wheel bearing and hub assembly.

Re: Spindle/ 4x4 hub help
So, if i buy new hubs, will all the snap rings come with it included like if I bought Warn hubs or something. The hub I took off is shot anyway. It is the stock one.

Re: Spindle/ 4x4 hub help
I'm intrigued as to how you broke a bearing taking it off. Are you talking about one of the tapered bearings or the small roller inside the spindle?

Re: Spindle/ 4x4 hub help
Are you going to replace the Spindle and then possibly (hub, rotor and wheel bearings)? Depending on condition, you might just hit it all. I believe I got mine (hub and Rotor together) from O'Reilly's. Not bad price.
New bearings and seal also good idea. On the two nuts, the first one in order, has a small nub on it. A lot of guys mix these up and end up torquing off the nub. The nub nut goes first and is loosely torqued, then the locking ring, and then the second "locking nut" goes on with a much larger torque setting (like 150 lbs). The hub assembly should be secured and rotating nicely. Then your locking hub assembly goes on. If you get new Warn hubs, I'm sure any new parts needed would be included. They are pretty straight forward from there. Here is a write-up I did...pretty much replacing everything as my rotors were NASTY! I went in further and replaced all 4 ball joints and axle shaft u-joints. A big job but successful! http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=282020

This is the V10 V20 front axle blowup from the 1985-1991 GM 52R Light Truck Parts Illustration Book. --->http://gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=54880 The next 2 pages will be the Diagram #, GM part numbers, and Descriptions. After that will be the V30 front axle.

Re: Spindle/ 4x4 hub help
Just so you know, the locking ring in the photo posted by Ski-me is from a truck with automatic hubs. The 4 square tabs on the outer edge are not there on most of them. It doesn't hurt anything if they are there, but they are not needed......because you really don't automatic hubs anyway.

Re: Spindle/ 4x4 hub help
You might have to be a member to see these pics but some good instruction with pictures that remove the auto hub and replace with Warn manuals. I also have the Warn hubs and are pretty straight forward.
http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthr...t+hub+assembly The diagram above looks a little different than mine (maybe a Dana 44 vs. my GM 10 Bolt ). The above picture I posted use all three pieces, regardless if I had auto hub or manual hubs. My Chilton lists it in this order: From the inside of hub you have seal inner wheel bearing inner race wheel hub outer race outer wheel bearing adjusting nut (the one with nub) - torque to 50 lbs for manual hubs and then back off 1/6 of turn - torque to 35 lbs for auto hubs and then back off 3/8 of turn Ring (locking ring with holes in it, be sure to get the nub in one of the holes) Locking nut (torqued to 160 lbs) After all this, then the auto hub or manual hub is installed.

Re: Spindle/ 4x4 hub help
This is the 52R parts book page for the V10 & V20 pickups with Auto hubs. http://gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=55578
As noted on the axle parts page there is not an illustration for the manual hubs. If the factory hubs are replaced with Mile Marker or Warn you'll need their documentation.
