Here are some pics of my steering column inner shaft upon disassembly. I had one of those moments staring in disbelief that a spring could do so much damage. The shaft had like a 5 degree bend in it too. That bend probably rotated every time the steering wheel turned.

I didn't have access to a lathe, but the bearing is nice and tight. Should work.
