Transmission Bell housing to Engine bolts
Hello all, I was able to get the stove bolt engine of my 51 AD into the frame yesterday but some of the trans BH to engine bolts (i used new #5 bolts) seemed to spin and not tighten. I was wondering if this means the holes in the engine need work of if I should be using a different bolt.

I went out and checked the bellhousing that I have out of my 51 truck and it should take 6 each 7/16 NC X 1-1/2 bolts with lock washers on them and possibly 1-1/4 inch long measuring just the shank of the bolt and not the head.
The two smaller holes are for the dowel pins on the back of the block Here is a shot of a 1-1/2 inch long 7/16 bolt that I put through from the inside with a lock washer on it. It may stick out just a bit too far though and possibly could bottom out in the block. That is a fine thread bolt and the only one I had handy for show and tell. By the way, as I have no clue as to how well you know bolt sizes you should be using a 5/8 wrench on the heads of the bolts you put in as normal 7/16 bolts take a 5/8 wrench. If you are perhaps using a 9/16 wrench you have 3/8 bolts which would be too small

Side note: you might want to take a phillips secew driver or small diameter bolt and check and see how deep the holes in the block are. Make sure you have enough depth in the holes in the block for the length of bolts you use so you don't bottom the bolts out.
