71 C10 BB Power steering pump question?

Hi, I just installed a 402BB in my 71 and used all the correct brackets and PS pump from our year trucks. Started the engine for the first time today and went to top off the PS with fluid, and noticed it didn't suck any into the pump? Also, the PS didn't work. Is there something I have to do to prime the lines or pump? It's the BB type with the reservoir mounted the the left front fender.
Thanks

Re: 71 C10 BB Power steering pump question?

i'm pretty sure the deal is too raise the front wheels off the ground and slowly turn the steering lock too lock then check the fluid. start the engine and do it again and check the fluid.
it should suck some fluid in. after it gets some in the gearbox lower the truck and do the same again.
i've also heard too do this and let it sit for a good while (letting the air bubble rise)and do it again.

other than that i'm not sure

Re: 71 C10 BB Power steering pump question?

I changed the pump on mine the other day. I just filled the reservoir, and drove it. It took a few turns, but worked itself out. Refill and go.

Re: 71 C10 BB Power steering pump question?

Thanks for the reply's, did what midniteblues suggested and it worked. Took quite a few times and was noisy at first, but seems to have cleared up.
Thanks again
