Nope. You are probably looking at the two screws to remove the cap. Look UNDER the body of the distributor and you should see a 9/16" hex head on a 3/8" bolt. Remove this and the distributor comes out in your hand. It will take a little wiggling. The shaft goes down into the bowels of the engine and drives the oil pump.

The distributor will be a foot long at least.

It's not imperative but it is a good idea to take the distributor cap off and make a crude little sketch (or a cell phone photo) of which direction the distributor rotor is pointing. This will speed up putting it back together if you don't turn the motor over while the distributor is on the bench.

It just dawned on me that you may be working on this in dimly lit single garage. That's a handicap in itself.

When pulling the dist I always get the motor to #1 Top Dead Center on compression stroke with timing marks on zero. I mark on the housing where the rotor is pointing like you suggested.
