1st gear w/ 700R4 in 72 Sub
I am inthe process of installing a new crate motor and 700R4 in my 73 sub w/ factory tilt column. I am haveing problems getting the tranny in 1st gear. Has any one else have this prolem? If so what was done fix it?

your factory column is for a three speed..you got four either swap the column or modify the linkage to get the extra "throw you need" but the pointer wont be correct.
someone has to have a better answer. I personally put in a later model column

you have to modify it slightly to get it to go into 1st on the stock column. they don't like up right on the indicator but i dont have a problem with it cuz i know what gear i'm in
you have to take like 1/8" off of the *detent* (or something like that)

'72 or '73? You say both.
I chucked the stock linkage in my '72 'burb. I used an aftermarket linkage that was adjustable on both ends, and it had an adjustable throw. I have no problem whatsoever with the stock column putting it in any gear I want to. The pointer doesn't line up, but I plan on changing that when I put my early 80's van tilt column in, and I'll find an indicator for a late 80s whatever with an overdrive.
