Nothing like that on mine.... maybe something aftermarket. Can you trace the wire?
Or unplug it and see what doesn't work anymore....

The pic is for reference not actual truck. My truck is apart right now with harness out of it. I'm thinking maybe A/C harness power? Does your truck have ac?

I think it is part of the vacuum/trans/emission control circuit. I had it in my 72' and it has since been deleted. No harm no foul as all bits and pieces were removed in 1973....

You are correct. My '71 had the "vacuum/trans/emission control", which I got rid of, and the harness for it plugged into that connector on the firewall.

In the picture you posted, the side of the connector facing away from the firewall has a tab on it that you pry up, then pull them away from each other and it should release that way.
