Bed wood refinishing options - 5 year test
Came across this while looking for bed parts.
http://www.mar-k.com/final_summary.aspx Wish they'd have done a 'linseed oil wipe down every so often' option. Looks like it's impossible to keep a clear finish looking good on a daily driver.

Just a thought, but has anyone tried outdoor grade Danish Oil?

Pine it is with option 9. Pine boards, coated with three brushed coats of Pelucid three hours apart, cured 4 days, block sanded, and sprayed with three coats of Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane.
or Stomper if you could start the test for the 'linseed oil wipe down every so often' option that would be great. I probably won't get around to doing it for 2 years

To bad they didn't do any with automotive clear coat only. I paint homes for a living and on the exterior wood doors I use automotive polyurethane and I've had them around for well over 5 years without any peeling or cracking.

Re: Bed wood refinishing options - 5 year test
Great article. Thanks for sharing. Long gone are the days of soaking the planks in used motor oil.
We just have to live with the fact that wood beds are a maintenance issue, no matter what. Mine is white oak which I hit with sand paper, steel wool, and PolyShades 1-step each spring just before the truck wakes from winter hibernation. Going on 8 years of abuse and still holding up pretty well. pic =

Re: Bed wood refinishing options - 5 year test
I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my bed wood and when I found out that 67 was the last year of black wood I thought I'd go this route and make it look factory with a twist. This was the test that solidified it for me when I found it.

Re: Bed wood refinishing options - 5 year test
I'm a better wood worker than mechanic and I get jealous every time I see these beautiful beds. With no garage and the Texas sun I opted for a bed that a quick wipe down of Armor All makes it look like the day I installed it.

Re: Bed wood refinishing options - 5 year test
I used oil stain then oil based polyurethane. Gave the wood about 3 montages, then scotchbrited it and hit with 2 coat automotive clear. Mines not a daily driver, but that's how I did mine. If you rush it the auto clear will react and "pop"
