Starter/Flywheel issue need help *pic*

I need some advice, this piece here is rubbing against the flywheel and making some racket, the noise is not there the entire time the engine is running. Only certain times it does, on initial start, going from park to reverse, park to drive and just for a few seconds. So my question is can i just use a dremel and cut that piece off?? I can buy a new starter thats not a prob but hate to buy a new starter just for something as small as that, aside from that issue the starter is fine. Am i nuts? Just go buy a new one and be done with it? Whatchu think?

I would try some shims first. Did you change anything before it started rubbing?

If that ring contacted the flywheel it would be destroyed.in fact it is to far from the flywheel.look for loose starter or bel housing bolts.

My own damn fault for this, went to start truck, turned key didnt think it was going to start, turned key again to early, bumped the engine over again just as it was firing up. Immediately after that the noise began, so im guessing the starter is done an over with. It has shims on already.

That ring on the very edge is worn down some if i rotate it, the pic i took doesnt show that but its there and noticeable.

I'll give that a try, and give it a good once over.

**update**

Went to autozone compared 2 different starters, looks like the one on my truck may have been the wrong one. Gonna install the new one and see how this other one fits, looks like i may have the extra clearance needed with this new starter.
