Re: transmission problems
Welcome to the forum! Sometimes the little anchoring tab towards the top of the transmission dipstick is loose or broken, check that first.

Re: transmission problems
thank you for helping out jake1971. i put on the new anchor tab that came with the tube, and it still seems to be leaking fluid from the bottom, is there supposed to be a lot of play on the tube? when i pull the dip stick to check the fluid level, the whole thing comes out of place

Re: transmission problems
Should be an o-ring where the tube enters the trans. It may still be down in the trans. If its old and shrunken it will still leave the tube loose. If its hardened it can be fun to remove if its still down at the trans. Sometimes you can also get a slightly thicker o-ring to get the seal snug again.

Re: transmission problems
There is supposed to be a heavy bodied o-ringed type sleeve or grommet that the dipstick is pushed into through the edge of the trans case. If the dipstick is just like sitting there in its hole it is missing or badly torn/worn and will leak everywhere. Congrats on taking on a project and making a daily driver from it. I got my first car when I was about 9 it was a Pontiac with a bad starter that had been sideswiped and my dad after asking him told me if I could get it running he would let me have it. Of course he didn't think I could. I'm now college educated along with trade school and have been in my own shop since 1987 and he still thinks that for some reason. I feel that I have to prove to him every day I can start that car. Welcome to the site . Jim

Re: transmission problems
thank you all for the info, i asked a buddy who's extremely car savvy. he told me that the o ring on the new tube was way too small, replaced that and now its good to go, fits snug and no more play, he also told me not to waist any money at autozone anymore. thank you all for all your patients and help. hugger6933, it was a pain in the ass for me considering i had no idea on what i was doing. ive had a lot of vehicles, but didn't know anything about vehicles at all, i decided to invest in this truck and learn everything i can on it, im planning on buying a newer 350 or 383 and taking this 327 small journal (from previous owner) and rebuild it on my own, im glad i found a forum where people actually help with questions instead of criticizing me because i'm not "car smart"

Re: transmission problems
With me your in a safe place there are no stupid questions how else do we learn if we don't ask? Some are verbal learners some are visual learners and some can learn a lot from some body that has grease under their nails and has done the work instead of reading it from a book. I try to learn some thing every day Before I went into body work as a profession I was/ am a auto /diesel tech but I couldn't stand the smell of it on my hands after a year or so of working on them.
