Sloppy steering column - help needed!

I have a '71 C10 that my son and I are slowly bringing back to life. The steering column (auto / non-tilt) has some serious issues! (PO changed original steering wheel to a smaller Grant wheel) The gear shift lever is generally sloppy, not crisp movement like a new vehicle. In fact, sometimes when driving it will fall from D to L2. I'd assume there are bushings, spacers, washers, etc. that could be worn, assembled incorrectly, or missing components entirely.

Two requests:
- Is there a "rebuild kit" to tighten up the column movement?
- Can someone provide a schematic so I can determine if the assembly order is correct.

If anyone else has suggestions, causes, or fixes please jump in!
Thank you

Re: Sloppy steering column - help needed!

there are some bushings and also where the shifter hooks to the shifter arm coming from the column there is a piece there with a hoe in it that the adjustment is made. check it for looseness or wear there and see if there is a washer on the inside or even a wave type washer to help hold it tight. I am not real familar underneath but on the later ones there are plastic bushings on all of the ends. just check each point where it is attached to the trans or the shifter, start on the column side and work your way down and you will find it. Welcome to the site. Jim
