Ring gear bolt question

With a stock 8 7/8-inch 12-bolt rearend fitted to a 1971 Chevrolet C-10 truck, are the ring gear bolts a traditional style or reverse-thread? (In other words, to tighten the ring gear bolts do you turn them in a clockwise direction?)

The reason why I ask is my dad just rebuilt the rearend on his 1958 Corvette and found out the hard way that the ring gear bolts were reverse-thread … which resulted in one of the bolts being broken off.

Re: Ring gear bolt question

If I remember right the are left hand thread. My oldest brother long time ago got him an old mopar to play with and came to my shop I had rented [the first place I had before the one I have now] and he was gonna take the wheels of the left hand side and before I could stop him he had broke about 8 lugs off with my huge Snap-on super gun. He had a temper and was so mad. i miss both of my brothers really bad. Jim

Re: Ring gear bolt question

there are normal threads. I just changed mine. I know the newer 8.6" are left hand thread but these are not.

Re: Ring gear bolt question

Broken or not, you should ALWAYS change the ring gear bolts. They come new with the ring and pinion set
