radio question

I have a 1991 chevy reg cab. Whenever you turn on the radio it plays fine for a few mins. Then it just cuts down to where you can barely hear it. this is the stock radio that came with the truck.

How do you fix this problem?

Re: radio question

More than likely, the amp has gone bad.

Re: radio question

I don't mean to sound stupid but is the amp in the radio head unit?

I believe for the 94 and early trucks, the head unit and amp are separate. At least I remember the radio as2 pieces. One hides up behind the dash with a cable that runs up to the control head unit.

Re: radio question

Definitely sounds like an amp overheating and shutting down.

Re: radio question

The amp is between the ashtray and the steering column. Just remove the cover under the column and you'll see it, there's three 7mm screws holding it in.
