The shaft unbolts off of the column. The end of the column is splined where it goes on.

Depending on which tilt you use, the collapsing shaft might need to be shortened a bit.

My stock non-tilt auto column has the shaft built onto it. There is no way to remove it and put it on another column. Just use a shaft off of a 3 speed column shift standard trans truck. They remove. Collapse as needed to fit.

every auto non tilt column i have ever had (5 or 6) the shaft comes off just like all the others

it should come apart right where the big washer and the collar missing the bolt is that pic looks like a van tilt with the shaft already collapsed
i have a true truck tilt a van tilt and an auto non tilt column in the garage if you would like i will take a pic of all three tomorrow.

Meathead, I know you're right. I've had them that were 2 piece too.

But, not this one. It's a stock auto column out of a 68 truck. I went ahead and took the shaft all the way out. It's not sectioned like the other ones are. 1 piece all the way down to the collapse section.

I layed it next to another shaft out of a normal 2 piece type column.
