Re: power steering box

Check the frame for cracks at the steering box bolts.
Check for slop in the rag joint.

Re: power steering box

The proper adjustment procedure is documented in the Service "Unit Repair Manual".

There are two adjustments: base preload, and "overcenter". These are normally done with the gear removed and in the vise on a workbench. Both are determined by measuring torque at the input shaft with an inch pound torque wrench. The base preload is adjusted by turning the large nut that surrounds the input shaft; over center, which affects the on center feel of the vehicle, is adjusted with the set screw/lock nut visible on the top of the gear.

In leiu of all this you can try cranking down the set screw and see if that helps.

Re: power steering box

You can adjust the steering box. However I don't recommend it. Any internal backlash is from worn parts. Replaced probably means a junkyard unit.

Look in my manuals post and page down to the Axles & Steering section. Download the unit repair training booklet for power steering. The second half is re-building and adjusting the Saginaw power steering box.
