Newbie SWB 4x4

Hello out there, I have been following this site for a while and just joined. My new purchase is a 70 chev shortbox 4x4 with a 72 cab, and GMC clip...Dana 44 and 12 bolt rear. 350 SBC. Im not sure what to call it yet, but my 14 yr. old son and I are starting the teardown this week. The box is off now and front clip to follow. It will get new disc brakes and rust repair...seats out and we have found some rust....of course, not bad tho. I am trying to post pics, and hope they show up with the post...Cheers...Rick

Welcome! Looks like a great father / son project. He'll appreciate the truck much more when he, ah, 'borrows' it in a year or two!

Thanks 68, I checked out your build thread and am impressed. I am not planning to take this one as far as you have, but I'm sure there will be some surprises along the way....maybe famous last words. Our truck is optioned similar to yours it seems. I need to find a donor axle for front discs and swap it in like you have. How is your build coming along?
ps...Wild and Canucks tomorrow night, I like your teams chances this year.

Haha ..no doubt. Well if he plays his cards right it will be his truck by the time he hits 16. No gifts tho, he can work it off while we work. Come to think about it..where is the little bugger...all 6.ft of him

Mine started with a simple clutch job and repaint of the engine, and turned in to a full on restoration haha. I got lucky because the previous owner did the axle swap. The axles are from a '73 Chevy and it does appear that the spring and shock mounts had to be modified to fit. My build was coming along good, but then I got lazy and haven't done anything on it in a long time. I haven't followed hockey for a few years but maybe I will catch the game tomorrow.
