$300.00 to rebuild a radiator?????????

So I took my 250 2 row Brass/copper out for my 74 because it was leaking. Brought to a shop in the city because he needed to "see it" to give me a price.

I walk in, he never looks at it and after 5 minutes on the phone checking prices, he walks over and says $300.00 give or take $20.00. Ridiculous! Absolutely ridiculous!

Now this is a shop that is highly recommended. Not just some crazy hillbilly shop with a brazier.

$300.00 is almost the cost of a new brass/copper. Im still shopping it around. We'll see what happens.

Repair shops for copper welding are gone in my area. The craft is dying because of aluminum and plastic end caps.

I remember back home a radiator shop down the street. My dad would take radiators there all the time. The guy was always busy. By the 90's, aluminum was standard. Eventually he retired and the shop was closed. It's still there but only the house next door is occupied.

We still have a good rad shop nearby, but I think most of his business is farm related. People tend to run old tractors and trucks for a looonnng time around here. The new rads you just replace them, so I agree, it's a dying art.

It is not that hard to straighten the fins and soldering brass and coper is simple as well. Now I am not about to take the cores apart but I can fix almost any leak on an old radiator.

I replaced the 4 core in my 99 454 Burban, it was expensive and I doubt it will out last the oem one in my 78 CC 454.

you would think you could get a new one for less than 300

Mounting a new core on the old tanks is usually around $280, just a rod out is usually $160 or so. New copper/brass radiator can be around the same price as installing a new core. I prefer to install a new core on existing tanks as long as the tanks are in good shape, this way every thing still fits the same. Sometimes those replacement radiator are off on a few of the mounting holes.

My buddy took it over to a shop he uses. 300.00 was the price again. I think im going to have it rebuilt. If I have to spend 300 on a radiator anyway I want my tanks and the same exact size like tony58 said.

I just wasn't planning on spending 3 bills on such a small radiator, whaaaaaaa

That's not really all that outrageous. $300 will get you a sh**tty rad, if you want an oem quality rad it's going to cost a helluva lot more than that. If I were you I'd bite my lip and pony up the cash

I can get a 350 rad from a buddy but I don't think im willing to risk a leak or malfunction. Im for doing it right the first time.

I know you can get them pressure tested and such, but if I have it rebuild at least it will be "new".

Those little Malasian kids that make most parts store radiators aren't starting with the best quality materials and could not give less of a **** if your truck cools properly. A radiator shop guy in your own town is going to use better quality parts and in the end give you a better quality product in most cases....

No trans cooler, but you can add one of the stand alone coolers for the cost of rebuilding your old rad.
