Painting Aluminum Intakes
I've noticed a few of you have painted your aluminum intakes. I have an Edelbrock Performer that will be going on my 454 when I rebuild it in the spring, and I want to paint it engine color. The problem being, I know paint does not stick well to aluminum. Anybody have any recommendations as to a product or procedure that will help the paint adhere permanently ?

I have the RPM Performer, all I did was clean mine with alumi-brite. Then rinsed it let, it dry off & painted it with no problems. Havent had any paint come off yet and that was well over a year ago.

Is the intake new? If its used, just clean it real well. Bead blasting it would be ideal, but if you cant, then clean the hell out of it..
I think paint sticks to the porous, rough cast finish better than anything.. If you use a good engine paint like that 500 degree stuff, and put several thin coats, it will hold up well.. I wouldnt even primer it mike |

Watch out though, that Dupli-Color 500* and 1200* paint isn't gas and oil resistant. Although it says so on the can.
I sprayed a Briggs & Stratton gas tank with the 1200* stuff. I coated it pretty thick, the carb leaks and ruined the paint. If you look at my avatar (thats the engine) it's nice and shiny, I took a wire wheel to it cause of the damn paint. Powdercoating is very nice. Shouldn't cost too much, maybe $50. That's what i'd do, unless you can find a paint that's truely gas and oil resistant. But why should the carb be leaking anyways?

I once bead blasted an weiand intake and didnt paint it but just sprayed clear over it. Looked pretty cool and definitely something different..............sorry i do not have pics of it. I would agree though about powder coating it if possible.
