Re: WTB 67-72 chevy 4x4 Shortbed Frame

I have a 2wd 1972 GMC leaf spring rear in SE WI $600 very clean southern frame. Includes rear leafs. I also have other parts. Front and rear 4x4 1/2 ton axles from a 72 with 373 gears $200 and a 4" tough country lift kit like new front springs and rear blocks with u-bolts $200, also maybe some of the parts for a 4x4 conversion, I'd have to check. 17 hours! Wow that would be a heck of a trip. Hoping to find something a little closer. Thanks for the help and still might consider it.

Re: WTB 67-72 chevy 4x4 Shortbed Frame

I have ordered all the components to modify the 2wd swb GMC leaf frame into a swb 4x4 from another board member. I am told that the parts should be here in a few weeks. You may want to keep this as an option. This would not be my first rodeo and the end result will be more than any of the negative responses you received about the conversion. Take it from someone who has the experience (ME) Thanks John

Re: WTB 67-72 chevy 4x4 Shortbed Frame

Frame will be to sell, after speaking to you on the phone I took the initiative to gather all the parts necessary for the conversion since I knew where to source them from and have the experience and resources to put this together for you. I figured since in the past 10 years I know there has been only one decent 69-72 swb 4x4 frame ever sold on this site, and I bought it. It cost me in excess of $800 to have it shipped to me and that was on top of the cost of the frame. I felt that I may be of some help to you by doing so. If you need this I have it and you will not be disappointed in the finished product. As I told you the frame is a 72 GMC swb leaf frame and it is the best candidate for a 4x4 conversion. John

Re: WTB 67-72 chevy 4x4 Shortbed Frame

I'd also like to ad that if you settle for a 67-68 frame you will end up having fits with it. 67 did not have provisions for power steering and both years had a wide leaf spring in them that no company makes a match for except for maybe custom. Their front leaf hanger was also a cast piece. I have been building 67-72 trucks for the past 26 years have owned dozens of them and know them well. John

Re: WTB 67-72 chevy 4x4 Shortbed Frame

Phil these are the parts I ordered to go on the frame for the conversion from a board member.
1. 4x4 V-8 Engine cross member.........................85
2. 4x4 Trans/Transfer cross member....................65
3. 4x4 Front spring/core support brackets ...........70
4. 4x4 Frame shackle mnt. for rear of front spring..50
5. 4x4 Front spring shackles...............................20.00?
6, 4x4 front shock mnts for frame.......................10
7. transfer case support mnt.............................45
8. Front bumper inner/outer brackets..................40.00 71-72 outers. I do not have the 70-down. Inners are the same as your 2wd
Not sure what shipping would be till packaged up. Probably about 75.00. How soon would you need these?

I copy and pasted this from his post, I should receive these soon. I did not purchase item #8 so delete that cost. I suppose I should ad that this will be available to anyone. I shall start my own post when the time comes that Phil decides what he wants to do. John

Re: WTB 67-72 chevy 4x4 Shortbed Frame

One last thing to ad that I thought of, I will be building this frame side by side with two factory 72 4x4 frames, one long and one short. I will be able to compare any differences and build to all specs. Phil if you want to come up and see for yourself you are welcome. John

Re: WTB 67-72 chevy 4x4 Shortbed Frame

John it sounds like it will be nice. I will probably keep looking for an original 4x4 for a while. I could also do the conversion myself if I had the 2wd leaf spring frame. I will be using a LS crossmember and not the stock plus my trans crossmember will be custom since I will be running a 4l80e trans.

Re: WTB 67-72 chevy 4x4 Shortbed Frame

I have a 67 short bed 2wd roller frame that I'm considering selling. I would ask $400 for it. It would come with 6 lug ralleys. Pm me if you are interested and you can come and take a look at it next weekend.

Maybe buy this roller and use the frame....sell the rest to recoup most of your investment? and easier to ship a roller...

It's local to me but not mine.

That roller is very nice would love to start with that but shipping would probably kill the deal I'm sure. To far to drive to get it, but it would be a great start.

Re: WTB 67-72 chevy 4x4 Shortbed Frame

I can still cancel the parts order and put you in touch with the member who as them, and you can then just purchase the parts you would like, and then sell you just the frame. I was out to the shed and looked over the 2wd and 4wd frames side by side and the conversion would be a snap. Very little to covert! and once done you would not be able to tell it was not factory except for the fact that the front and rear of the fronts leaf spring hangers are bolted instead of riveted. You say that you can fabricate so I am puzzled by your hesitation to do this and end up with a cherry frame. Do not take this offensively, just trying to get you on your way for your build John

Re: WTB 67-72 chevy 4x4 Shortbed Frame

No offense. I understand your frame is nice but there are some differences like the large holes left in the front area where the control arms bolt thru, by the font rear hanger is buldged out and needs massaged to get to work. I have the capability to do all that and still might consider but for right now am still going to keep looking for a factory frame. They are tough to find but that is part of the fun
