Reversed Coil wires ??

Hey could a reversed Coil cause hard starting, stalling ?

The wire thats on the outside of the Distributor(on the screw) goes to the + on the coil and the green wire goes to the - is that correct

Because I've been told it is reversed and needs to be switched

Re: Reversed Coil wires ??

Wiring coming from the points goes to the negative, positive wire goes to ignition. They are backwards

Re: Reversed Coil wires ??

Is the green wire, the Points wire? because the Screwed on wired on the side of the distributor..on the left side you know what I am speaking about right? and the green wire is to the right of the Dist, it touches the engine in the wiring harness?
That could explain, the hard starting and horrible idling..I've put new Wires, cap and rotor cap soon to be new spark plugs

If I reverse this and the truck runs a lot better without cutting off on me and stalling, backfiring. I will be beyond pissed..

Re: Reversed Coil wires ??

That would explain the fouled dark plugs too. It will run but with less power to the plugs.

Re: Reversed Coil wires ??

Also explains the hard starting, stalling and backfiring. It rattled as just a little..I'm going to go switch them and see if it starts any better

Re: Reversed Coil wires ??

I switched them and the truck still runs like ****. Probably because of the disconnected Vacuum line and Fouled plugs...But damn is it COLD today yikes!!!. The Green Wire is on the green wire is now on the + and the Black is now on the -

The Spark Plugs looked excessive wear to them, although I know the truck hadn't been drove in ages and barely even used? Makes no sense to me !!!

Re: Reversed Coil wires ??

I thought you said you got new ac plugs? When you change them do a compression test to see if there are any issues with the rings or valves. Until you get the vacuum hooked up and make sure there are no vacuum leaks it will run lean and bad. Did your guy set the points using a dwell meter or just gapped them? Also, make sure that the wires on the inside and outside of the distributor from the coil are not shorting to the housing or plate inside. It is real easy to twist the one inside when tightening the outside so it contacts or gets close enough to the point plate to short out. As long as you are back in there I would change the condenser too, its cheap.

Re: Reversed Coil wires ??

I have them, but hadn't had a chance to go put them on. No one set the points because I haven't put new points in it. The truck has a Vacuum leak and I am sure of it, I am going to fix the Vacuum line. Smoke is coming off of the valve cover towards the firewall the Gasket is new. I need to probably tighten down the valve cover down. Once it warms up a tad and the damn wind isn't so bad, I will get to work on it.

The most common cause of valve cover leaks is tightening down the valve cover. Over-tightening bends the sheet metal and then the cover leaks. The torque spec is about 3 ft.-lbs., so go lightly. If it's leaking, the edge is probably already bent so it might be a good idea to take it off and straighten it first.

Re: Reversed Coil wires ??

One simple way to make sure you have the coil hooked up correctly is that the side of the coil going to the distributor always has to match the battery's ground hookup on the vehicle with no exceptions. Meaning if the truck has negative ground the minus or negative pole on the coil is connected to the distributor.

Re: Reversed Coil wires ??

I've declared it to be a Vacuum leak...if I could keep it running long enough to spray some stuff...Tomorrow should be a prettier day, so I am going to put the new Plugs in and empty the Gas tank and see how it goes from there

Re: Reversed Coil wires ??

Old truck engines don't have PCV valves, it's normal for a little smoke to come out of the valve cover.

Re: Reversed Coil wires ??

Looks like the sun is out. Is this after putting in the plugs and points? I see the vacuum line looks hooked up. If not get the plugs in (take a compression test while you have them out to eliminate any piston/valve issues) install points and condenser and get it properly timed. Running good at idle, but dieing in gear with an auto usually is timing, to low idle setting or vacuum issue. Since you just had the carb rebuilt I doubt it is any internal circuiting. I noticed you pushing in the choke, was the engine warmed up? Muffler noise makes it hard to hear the engine.

Re: Reversed Coil wires ??

I flushed the gas tank washed it out.. put (3) new plugs in( I'll put the rest in tomorrow). the filter was so dark and clogged. The rubber hose before the pump was corroded bad and I just replaced it and let all of the fuel drip out..I'm going to have help putting in the new inline fuel filter and I have someone when they have time going to check my Valves.. What type of Flathead Screwdriver do you need to tighten the Distributor it is sorta loose.. because the small one I have cant reach it..

You hear them rattle. A bit loose probably won't be a big issue right now unless they are way loose. They would rattle but not cause that big of an issue. Pulling a load, climbing a long grade or running out on the freeway could be where you would notice though. Then the performance would be off when you need every bit you can get out of that engine.

If you pull the hose off the carb end of the line to the vacuum advance and suck on it or if you have a little vacuum pump and can pump a suction on the advance does it hold vacuum? or do you get a resistance on it at all? usually I just take a clean piece of vacuum hose I have in my tool box and stick it on the advance and suck on the other end to see if I can make the advance work and get a proper resistance sucking on it. I could dig out my Mity-Vac vacuum pump and use it but usually I am in a hurry and don't do that.
If you had crud in the tank plugging things up you probably now have crud in the carb.

Do yourself a favor and do not make more than one change at a time before trying it. I've followed behind way too many guys in the past fifty years that did and in turn created problems rather than fixed them.

It's pretty much the following;
Check list:

Fuel system clean with a new filter and clean good gas. This also means a clean and properly set carburetor.

Points adjusted correctly, firing order correct 1-5-3-6-2-4, Timing set (after it runs with advance disconnected and line to carb plugged.

Valves adjusted correctly.

Re: Reversed Coil wires ??

I hope there is nothing in the carb lol... I literally replaced the small rubber hose before foe the Fuel Pump. I don't know how I can put the new inline on when theres nothing to connect to really? I am going to run Prem first and the go with Medium from now on
