67 c-20 steering column

If I want to upgrade my column to a tilt how do I go about measuring for the correct length? I know the obvious answer, with a tape measure. Want to make sure what I order is going to fit. Can I shorten the stock length? This would allow more cab space. Also any recomendations on a replacement seat. The truck came with a seat out of a late model chevy truck with shoulder belts. This keeps the seat from going back fully. Want to maximize the cab room if possible. Thanks in advance for your help!
