Flame Throwers
Has anyone here tried putting "off road" flame throwers on their truck and if so did it meet with success or failure? There advertised in the magazines as easy to hook up but for show use only.
Thanks. |

It wasn't on I truck, but I helped install one of these once. It was on my brother's '65 Coupe Deville. The "kit" he had was just a little electronic box that triggered the coil(s) in the right way to get the plug(s) to fire. It was designed to kill the coil for the engine to get some extra fuel in the exhaust and then ignite it.
We didn't want little fireballs coming out the exhaust, though. We wanted FIRE! So, we rigged up a fuel pump to shoot gas out the end of each exhaust pipe. We also made little slip on extensions for the exhaust pipes that had the spark plugs in them. This let us easily remove the spark plugs when we weren't using it and it helped keep from melting anything in the back of the car... It took some trial and error to get it working consistantly. Too much fuel and it would pool up in the exhaust and sometimes wouldn't ignite; too little and the flames would go out or be tiny. In the end it worked out pretty good (flames would shoot out about 4-6 feet) and only took a few hours to get everything done.

I have them on my black '68 Shortbed. The exhaust comes out angled back in front of the rear tires. They shoot about 4-6 feet. Looks amazing works everytime.

I have flame thrower kits on both my 71 and 67. Its pretty bad a$$. cruise the town strip and hit it a few times and you'll have people asking you about it for months. get some pics of it in action when i get a chance. I dont have any sort of injectors, just the raw fuel from the motor. it gets 2-4 ft flames. oh yeah and people stay way far away when they see you have that. i've gotten pulled over for it before, but i told the cop my motor was having problems and backfiring. He believed me....lol.....

You could always cut power to the distributor and flood the crap out of it. Then put power back to the distributor and crank it up. INSTANT MUFFLER BOMB! Yes I did it on accident once, I don't know how there isn't a hole in the bottom of my cab! That turbo muffler was split open about 8 inches on one side all the way from the front to the back..... No, I did not do that on purpose! lol

flame pipes
Easy way to do it in a few minutes. Works with non hei distributor. Run a wire from the negative terminal of ignition coil to another coil under the bumper (we will call this one coil 2). positive terminal on coil 2 to a toggle switch in the cab. put some big ass tips on your pipes, stick them out an inch or 2 to keep the soot off of the bumper. The universal fit type sold at pep boys work well. drill holeabout 3 inches in from the end of the tip. install 2 old spark plugs gapped at about 1/8 inch into the holes. Run some old plug wires fron the plugs to the coil 2.
Start engine, turn on toggle switch, pull manual choke untill engine is trying to die and rev it up. big flames, much fun. Dirt cheap and works well. Takes a little time to really get the whole choke/throttle timing down, but i've done a few real nice pipes for next to nothing. By the way, i've found glass packs and flowmaster mufflers can take constant key off, key on backfiring. only weak spot is the exaust doughnuts on the maniflod/headers.

I think that Pardus Customs can get a kit for this from AutoLoc. I almost bought this for my 72 but backed out. He could explain it better than I could. Just PM him and ask him about it.

I had a friend that used to do that all the time for the fun of it. He never did know when to quit though. He ended up going through 2 motors and about 5 sets of mufflers before he stopped.
