Hard top fit

Getting ready to put the top on my 72 (single wall) and it seems when the bed holes are lined up, the top is over the windshield ,and when lined up with windshield, body bolts off by maybe an inch.Anyone seen this, could windshield frame be pushed back a bit ??

Re: Hard top fit

What kind of shape is your rocker boxes in? They are locate under drivers and passengers floor board. They support the body when the top is off. rusty or missing can cause sag.

Re: Hard top fit

Try putting a floor jack under the front body mounts on a piece of wood running across the rocker boxes and putt some upward pressure on it. That should flex the windshield forward. The rear covers you tossed should be replaced as soon as possible as they are structual to keep the body stiff.

Re: Hard top fit

yes it had a top when I got it,it came off in pieces.the gap at the back of the door is a uniform 3/8 of an inch, plus or minus, but the gap at the front of the door is tight at the cowel and opens up at the bottom.I will try the jack trick latter this afternoon. You guys are great !!

Re: Hard top fit

Are you trying to use a 1x wall top on a K5 originally equipped with a 2x top maybe?

Re: Hard top fit

The top may be on, but it is now under a bunch of stress once you let the jack down. You should shim/replace your body mounts so that the top is not fighting the body sag. Body sag will win that fight every time against the SMC/fiberglass top. The top on my Blazer goes on and off with no issues since I replaced and re-shimmed all of my mounts. Just my $0.02.

Re: Hard top fit

^^Agreed^^

Replace the body mounts, then shim apropriatly while watching the door gap alignment. When the door gap is even top to bottom, the top should also be in alignment, that is unless the doors were readjusted for the sag condition.

My blazer had 2 1/2" sqaure shims wirh a half inch hole in them. They varied in thickness from 1/16" to 1/8". There should be a sleeve inside the rubber bushings that pulls up tight against the washer and floor board so if thay are tight, I wouldn't worry too much about loosening and re-torque. The original bolts are tack welded to the floor, if you have to remove them, keep that in mind.

Re: Hard top fit

It's possible if they didn't do it correctly that the body will sag. When mine didn't have a top on for a couple years it lets the windshield frame sag as well.
