4.3 / 700r4 into a 64 information needed

We have a 64 short stepside that was a 230 IL6 w/ 3spd man.
I got a great deal on the 4.3 / 700 r4 rebuilt pair. Although it's not a sbc it should be a good daily driver combination for my son's truck.
Has anyone done this swap that could share their experience? My biggest concern is the motor and frame mounts for the engine. Is there any factory combination of parts that will get this bolted in simply or will I need to fab together mounts?
I have the original 6 mounts as well as ones from an 88 1500.
As always any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would just install the engine at the original motor mount location, and then just let the trans crossmember locate off of the trans. Then just drill the bolt holes for the trans mount. You will have to remove the bellhousing crossmember. You could use the better '73+ clamshell style motor mounts, but you will need to use the frame brackets from a C20 or C30. Those will fit the early frames better than the brackets from a C10.

Thank you for the responses.

So I should be able to bolt the early style mount onto the 4.3 and it will bolt onto the 64 frame brackets with the single bolt?
If so I agree, just bolt the engine/trans in and let the trans tailshaft mount determine where xmember will be located.

I have done a lot of searching on this swap and have not found a detailed completion.

Sam my son is in love with your truck!!! Now I need to figure out rear gas tank and filler door on a stepside.

Still multiple other concerns on this project: Just cant bring myself to open up the question on best rear mounted tank for a tbi to the forum. LOL

Yes the '63-'72 motor mounts will bolt right up to a 4.3 V6. The 4.3 V6 is basically a small block with 2 cylinders removed. However the distance from the back of the block to the center of the motor mount is shorter than on a small block.

I had a 4.3 in an 88 Caprice. No power, but great mileage. It was TBI/overdrive. I think it will do fine in our trucks. A little lighter than the Caprice, but pretty close.

Let us know how it goes. That is the same combo I am going with. They have plenty of power, good fuel mileage and very dependable for a daily driver.

My original idea was to install the TBI on a 292 engine. After talking to a mechanic friend of mine he suggested using the 4.3 TBI. This made me think about first putting the 4.3/700r4 combo in first and then swap everything over to the 292, waiting to see how yours comes out.

Not sure. The stock crossmember in the 64 should work though, unless it's different than the crossmember in the 66. I reused my stock crossmember when I first switched over to the 700r4.

Truck was a 3 speed standard, swapping in 4.3 and a 700 r4. I have an 80 donor located, can anyone confirm that the auto trans crossmember from the 80 will work in my 64 with the 700r4?

Referring to your question about TBI and the best fuel tank, we used the inexpensive $199.00 blazer fuel tank, then modified it to accept a 91 suburban in tank fuel pump. (do not try inline pumps I got stranded and burned up 4 before going to in the tank pump).....TBi pumps are low pressure 12-16psi so only cost $100.00 approximately...... hope that helps. Kieth

The trick to inline pumps is getting it as close to the tank as possible, I had my stock gas tank hot tanked at a local radiator shop, and welded a mount to the side of it and mounted my pump there and the pump was a inline ford replacement pump that I read about in an off road forum, (cuz everybody put TBI 350's in everything) and it worked great! Also fs64 don't foget about your drive shaft length, (not sure if that was mentioned) 700r4 I believe are 32in long.

I, too have heard a lot of people using the Ford Carter inline pumps-they are originally frame mounted so designed for that purpose.

I built my own in tank set up for less than $50 using stock replacement parts from O'Rielly's. I did do a tank modification by adding a second sending unit hole. I used the old non-working sender for a fuel pickup, installing the pump and sock and set at about 1/4 " off bottom of tank. I used the insulated terminal of the old sender as the power supply to pump and simply used a screw and nut thru the sender face to make the new ground. it has worked flawlessly and quiet. I installed a new sender in the second hole in the tank and used it as the return.

To make more room in the cab, I have since switched to a rear mount tank. The original in cab tank is available.

Heck yeah that sounds like the way to go! Did do anything for the return line from the TBI, just wondering? He should get that old tank from you to!

Thanks everyone for the replies. I came across a blazer style polyethylene tank and am planning on going with a tbi pump setup from Tanks inc. They have a neat setup PA-TBI that has a trough that fills from the return line that provides a sump for tanks without baffles.

I was searching for a donor for the front disc / power steering / brake booster swap and found an 80 GMC being parted out. I thought that the trans Xmember would work but wanted reassurance from those with experience; Doesn't matter though the whole deal fell apart today.
That one from POL is on my list if I don't find a good donor soon.
I have a couple more leads to follow up on tomorrow.

Captain, what would be your preferred one?

Yes the return from the TBI goes into the fuel sender.

A factory auto trans crossmember from a '63 to about '77-'78 pickup, Suburban, etc.
