I agree with the post above, the smaller sized 6" long bits will break frequently.
I think they are commonly used when you want to drill a broken bolt out. Sometimes the bit "catches" and the bolt comes out while drilling.

That's exactly right. Running the drill in reverse and the bit cutting in a lot of times will extract the bolt without the need for an ez out.
