1966 checy c10 won't start

So this is my first post to this site. I haven't used this site much at all, so I don't really know what I'm doing.. But I have a 66 Chevy c10 with a 230-6 and 3 on the tree. It has a factory rebuilt carb, head has recently been off for valve work, so it has all new gaskets from there up, and also has new spark plugs and wires. About a week or so ago it started getting harder to start. It would turn over but wouldn't fire for a while, which is why I changed the plugs and wires. After changing the plugs and wires, it started right up with no problem. The next time I drove it, it started fine again, but when I got ready to come home, it wouldn't start. I took the breather off and fumes poured out, almost as if it was flooded. And also the air filter had fuel on it. I ended up having to pull it off to get it to start, and after I got it home, it wouldn't start again, and has yet to start again. What could the problem be? If it is flooding, why? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I had similar issue with my l6 engine. Check to see if the air cleaner bolt is not threaded down to far, it will hold everything open in the carb and cause flooding. Also, check your plugs for fouling since its been loaded up fuel a few times.

It could very well be a variety of things...first off you saw fuel fumes in the air filter...well..after enough pumping and cranking that will happen...I would adjust your air fuel mixture needle and see it that helps. Also..make sure your coil an points are in working order..though it may sound odd..electrical parts may work fine one day...and horribly the next.

I would check the spark at the coil wire. Then put a condenser in it for good measure. When I used to run points I carried a set in the glove box.

Sounds like too much gas to the carb.

Re: 1966 checy c10 won't start

Thanks for all the advice guys! I'll check a few things and see how it goes. And DPowers, I bought a new carb that had been fully rebuilt and that hasn't been too long ago.

Re: 1966 checy c10 won't start

Okay, I took the distributor cap off, and the points inside the cap were corroded as well as the tip on the rotor. So looks like it'll be a good idea to change that, even if it isn't the problem. I'm gonna go ahead and change the Coil and condenser, and the vacuum advance too. Is there anything I need to know before doing any of that? Could I mess anything up by doing that? Thanks for the help!

I would do the points and condenser together each time you service them. Do the rotor also and give it a try.

Since your gonna change stuff..I would buy new points, condenser, rotor cap, and distributor cap..and new plugs. New spark plug wires might be a good idea to..Napa premium 7 MM wires are ready to go on..and price is like $25-30 for a set.

Re: 1966 checy c10 won't start

I got her going! Running as good as always! Changed the distributor cap and rotor, the coil and condenser, and the plugs and wires got changed about a week ago. So hopefully she's good to go now! Haha Thanks for all the advice guys! I really appreciate it!
