350 Engine Identification

I bought a 1970 Chevy Blazer and I am pretty sure the motor isn't stock but I am having trouble trying to ID the small block motor that is in it. It has the 5/8 taper plugs (which is why I know at least the heads are newer). The stamped VIN numbers on the block looks like some numbers are inverted. I've been looking on the internet and am having trouble figuring this out. Number appears to be V0917CKS but at least the 1 and maybe more are inverted. Anyone have any guess on what engine I have?

Look here.
You'll need the casting number and date code off the back of the block to narrow it down.

Re: 350 Engine Identification

the CKS is the important part - according to geezer's link, same one I usually use, it's either:

1972 350 4 spd trans. LT1 255 hp 4bbl Z28 (of THIS, then ya better hang onto that sucker!)
or
1973 350 tur hydro, Calif 145 hp 2 bbl F A B (Camaro, chevelle, or impala/caprice)
or
1977 350 a/t, LM1 L 170 hp 4bbl F (i.e. Camaro)

agree that some #'s look inverted. Odd. But it's not original.
The V0917 means Flint MI plant, sept 17th.

Might want to check the casting number/ID on the rear of the block behind the heads.

Re: 350 Engine Identification

Thanks for the link. I was hoping I could figure this out without the casting number as I don't know when I'll be able to see that. Maybe I can get a mirror in there?

Re: 350 Engine Identification

I am starting to lean to the 1977 350 as I see some blue paint under the grime and I believe chevy stated painting the motors blue in 1977.

A mirror and a flashlight. Angle the mirror while you shine the light into the mirror.

Re: 350 Engine Identification

I think GM 305 heads should have 5.0 cast into them at the top rear of the head.
