4L65, and transfer case's.

After I get my truck back on the road, and before I get the truck 100%. I want to throw in a over drive tranny.

I know the 4L65 goes with the NP208, and they can be had easy enough.

But what about the push button type's. Are they any good for a dirt road type 4x4?

Re: 4L65, and transfer case's.

Fragile, unreliable engagement. Most guys go the other way and replace the crappy pushbutton unit with a manual one.

Are you sure you wouldn't be more happy with a Subaru?

Re: 4L65, and transfer case's.

You can't put plywood in the back of a suby, and I am not a thespian.

I just want the 4wd in case I get stuck going to an out of the way fishing hole or campsite. In all likely hood a 2wd would suit my needs off-road again, but when you get stuck by yourself it is no fun. Been there in a lowered truck years ago, and got stuck in silt pulling off a dirt road to go fishing. Took me 4 hours to dig the truck out again. The lowering didn't help, but it was not the reason I got stuck.

Re: 4L65, and transfer case's.

Hey, no Subaru hate here. I've owned 8 of the damn things over the years. Great, cheap little cars that are pretty tough...for what they are.

Since it sounds like you won't even really use the 4WD except for very rarely, my thoughts would run to a system that you KNOW is going to work when you need it (i.e. manual hubs and a manually shifted transfer case), rather than something like failure-prone auto hubs or one of those crappy pushbutton transfer case that may or may not decide to engage.

Re: 4L65, and transfer case's.

Besides the 208 which hooks to a 4L65 from the factory. Is there any other choices that still engage manually? I am trying to save adapter money, and just get a package.

I have a turbo 350 hooked to a NP203, and would like a 2wd hi for long drives.

I like what I read on that one. Next time I got to pick a part I will look for one.

was used on the 700r4/4l60 so it should bolt on as long as the spline counts are the same.

Re: 4L65, and transfer case's.

Do you mean a 4L60? An upgraded 4L60? Or a 4L65e? Because the 65's and 70's are all shifted (and pressure modulated) by a control module.

I wanna use the 65E because it works a bit better in OD, and I can get ride of the TV cable thing.

Re: 4L65, and transfer case's.

Installing a 4L65e is not an inexpensive proposition. Budget $2000

I was in the transmission parts store the other day and the counter girl commented on how many customers didn't seem to know the difference between a 4L60 and a 4L60e

Yes, and a 4L65e is just a 4L60e with a 5 pinion reaction planetary and redesigned input shaft and torque converter

Re: 4L65, and transfer case's.

If you plan on using a truck like a truck...the 700R4 sucks.
