Is the cab the same?

Found a truck. 1949. Looks like a 1 ton to me. I'm having a bit of a hard time trying to figure out. Is the cabs all the same? The guy wants to sell this set up for about 1200. It's sitting on a s10. Unfortunately I'm not going to that route. I'm thinking art Morrison.

So what I am asking. First. Is this a 1 ton? Second. Am I going to have to toss hood and fenders and the only thing I'll get for this 1200 he is asking is the cab? And 3rd. Is it a good deal? I asked the guy for more pictures but this is all I have.

I'm still a little new to all this. I'm learning though.

Re: Is the cab the same?

looks like a 1/2 ton to me, the 1 tons have a telltale hook in the area where the fender meets the hood. Looks like a badge on the hood, if its 3100 or 3600 you should be good.

and art morrison? I dont know everything and dont take me the wrong way, but I know if were dropping 11-12k on just the chassis, no wheels, drivetrain, body or interior, I might start with the just absolutely cleanest body I could ever possibly find.

Re: Is the cab the same?

Thanks for your input. Can you give me a little more insight of why you say that?

My plans for the truck in to have the body completely worked over and cleaned up. Going to chop the cab 2.5". Mini tub. Their won't be anything that's not going to have gone over. With that said. I also am far from knowing everything. What's the down side of something like this?

Re: Is the cab the same?

What ever it is its not a $1200 cab its 350-400 at best. looks like 51 up doors that are missing the vents. If your doing a chop and redoing eveything get a cheaper cab

$1200 cab would have little to no rot, be a 5 window, good dash, good doors and front fenders and hood that are workable.

the downside is you could spend another 4-5k in metalwork labor and patches on body parts when you could have found a 3-5k donor in a lot better shape than a 1200 dollar barn fresh. just isnt strirring the kool aid for me that you would spend 10x on the chassis is all, do what you like!

.
Wrong info you are giving out. 1 tons have the same hood and fenders that 1/2 and 3/4 tons do. the one tons even the dual rear wheel ones run the pickup style bumper rather than the heavy ribbed bumper.

Malace, it's one of those If deals from what I see, meaning if it has a title that matches the cab and if you can sell the pieces you don't want for a reasonable price you might have a nice cab and nose for a decent price.

I agree with one thing Joedoa said and that is buy the absolute best cab you can get your hands on. It's worth paying a bit of a premium to not have to deal with some of the issues that pop up on these cabs. I figured out yesterday that I am going to have to change My plans on what cab I use for the front half of my new stretched cab. The one I had stashed back for the past 20 years has severe rust in the kick panels that I don't want to contend with.

Re: Is the cab the same?

That's definately not a big bolt body.

The 3100, 3600, and 3800 all had the same bodies. I want to even say that the 4100 did too considering they used the same front axle as the the 3800. I can't confirm that though.

The "big bolts" would've had different fenders and hoods to accomodate the larger wheels/front axle.

Cabs would've been the same up to the 6000 series truck. The exception being the 5000 COE trucks.

Re: Is the cab the same?

My brother has my maternal grandfather's 48 one ton dual rear wheel truck that he bought new in 1948 and he, my uncle Cliff, my dad and probably a couple of my Davison uncles built the bed and stock racks for here in the yard where I now live. I was not quite 3 at the time but remember it was a big deal that uncle Cliff took the branding iron and put the family brand on the side of the freshly finished and painted stock racks.

There are photos somewhere from the mid 80's with that truck sitting with my red front end complete with louvered hood sitting on it. My grandfather rolled the truck in the early 60's and he and I patched it back up with a 52/53 door he found on the drivers side and a lot of bottle jack and hammer work by me to get the roof back in shape and then in the late 70's or early 80's I swapped a nice five window cab over to it off a truck I bought for parts.

Re: Is the cab the same?

Well current status of the truck is I am going to buy it. Now i know a lot of you guys said find the very best cab you can find. I think this is the best i have found. Zero cancer on the cab. It sits on an s10 frame. Which i already sold. Good fenders front and rear but no bed. The guy dropped it to $1000. So i'm thinking i'll pick it up tomorrow.

I'll try to get a bunch of pictures so you guys can take a look. Maybe you will be able to see something I don't.

Re: Is the cab the same?

If you are happy with it life is good. Being able to sell off the S-10 frame and recover part of the investment helps a lot too.
